CCS Tundra tarp?

Boundary Waters Journal tarp?

OES MacCat?

Other?

I'm longing for a good tarp and it will be under the tree for me if I play my cards right. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I use the CCS Tundra Tsrp. It's 10 x 14 in 1.9oz material. I know it's not the lightest stuff out there but I don't carry it for miles at a time so I don't care. I've had great success in really wet, windy weather with no leaks and it stayed tight. The tarp is made with a very high quality of web around the edges and NO GROMMETS. For the $120 I paid for it the tarp has been a bargain. Plus it's made here in Minnesota.

Anything beats the old fashioned square Wal Mart tarps I've been humping on my first three years of tripping! Thanks, Sierra1!

1.1 oz CCS Tundra Tarp. I have a party of two at the most and love the coverage of the 10x14. Like having a second day house out in the bad weather.

Both the 1.1 and 1.9 are well made and the same construction. How good you have been is the next question.

Mine is six years old.

And the 1.1 is more expensive and lighter, correct? And still strong, worth the extra cost? Thanks.

I've had a CCS 1.9 for several years. Still going strong!

Just my opinion here. If you're a person who is looking to cut as much weight as possible? Then go with the 1.1. Otherwise the 1.9 will serve you just fine.

I bought the CCS 1.1 last year and loved it the first time I used it. I think that says a lot about a product.

My advice is to consider the color because whatever color you choose with sunlight coming through that is what you will experience. I bought the 10 x 12 and consider that a good size for a small group.

Good luck.

It's all about quality... the combination of the strength of the perimeter sewing, the ripstop nylon and the multiple tie-outs, including across the face of the tarp, and the relative light weight of both the 1.1 and 1.9 ounce tarps make CCS the best product out there.

Pick a size that works for you and your group and buy it. You'll never wish that you had made a better buying decision.

I agree - we own two and after many years of use, they are still in great shape. In my opinion, this is the best tarp money can buy.

I had a Kelty Noah for years and several of the old noisy, bulky poly tarps. Finally "Treated" myself to a CCS almost 4 years ago and I'm tickled I did. Many different ways it can be pitched easily and well. Impeccable build and service. You WON'T be dissatisfied with a CCS!

Another vote for the tundra tarp. I have a 10x12 tarp. Very nice tarp.

Aagh..thanks. I can't believe I did that.

Color consideration is a must. I wished now I had gotten bright colors. Others might like the green I have.

Apparently the CCS tarps are the best. That's what I hear anyway. My Kelty Noah's Tarp and the couple cheapo's I got from Sportsman's Warehouse both work very well though. Have used the Kelty for a few years now and have had no problems with it.

Oh yeah, Forgot to add that I want a CCS Tundra Tarp someday. Not until after the Kelty blows up though. That may be several years.

Both threads are very helpful. Thank you all. I am undecided on the weight, but these CCS tarps seem very popular. One of these will be under the tree for me this year I hope!

10x14 CCS 1.1 was the right one for me, I like it a little longer so I can rig a nice vertical wind/rain wall and still have plenty of sqft left overhead.

Yes to CCS. Heck, it's Christmas. Treat yourself to the best. You just can't beat the quality.

I have all three sized tarps from MEC and love them all. The Scout is perfect for solo use, the Guide is great for a bit larger group or more coverage and the Super Fly is...well...massive. Great quality for a very fair price:

Scout

Guide

Super

All of these tarps are available in Silicone as well...

I bought a used 10x14 tarp from Piragas this year. Very light, well built, perfect condition. Fits into a small stuff sack (included). May well be the CCS. If they have more it can save you some $ and you can expand your Christmas list.

We've been called worse. :-)

Regarding features, I've had grommets pull out on me from a cheap tarp. That's the one feature I would shy away from on any tarp.

I'm sure there are other companies than CCS that make fine tarps however I like to support the smaller operations. And since Dan is an engineer I'm hoping that rubs off on the stuff he designs.

What size works best? Usually our group is 4 to 6.

12/06/2012 11:31AM
Lke ragged, I went with the 1.1 oz, 10x14, and often rig it the same way. The larger tarp provides a lot more coverage and versatility in the ways you can pitch it without much weight penalty.

I'd personally do 2 10x10s. Lots more options than one big tarp, but that will increase your costs. If money is no problem then get the CCS 1.1 oz.

I bring one 10x10 and that works for up to 4 people. 6 would be tight, if you have 6 more often than 4 than I'd look at the 2 tarp option or the 10x14.
