anyone else like to make things while camping. I've always enjoyed carving by the fire, mostly utilitarian items, spoons, bowls, cups, etc - then I sand them up later, at home.

It's always been a family tradition to carve small cedar beavertail paddles.

On my last solo I cut a cedar log slab about 2" then wrapped the exterior with a leather thong. Nothing fancy, but it was the start and leans against my old area map with trips marked. Your work inspires me to more. Working with the hands is a great way to spend time and especially pleasant on solo trips. I know you use a special knife, could you discuss it, perhaps a photo sometime?

A crooked knife is like a one handed drawknife - where you carve towards yourself instead of away from yourself.

I don't have a good photo. The second knife in, to the right, is a crooked knife, though not my best one. It is not easy to tell what you're looking at in the photo.

Below are some photos and a drawing off the internet:

Beautiful handiwork, RBB!
Speaking for myself though, I guess I'd be apprehensive about being out in the wilderness and slicing a finger or hand a good one. I did that once when I was whittling something in Boy Scouts. Thank goodness, medical care was close at hand then.

While in the Horseshoe, Gaskin area we found a dead cedar with a burl about 14" in diameter. We used the tree for firewood and carried the burl, "Milton," out. It is unfortunately still waiting to be made into bowls.

Yes, you'd probably want to practice with it at home a bit before trying it on the trail. Not to say it couldn't happen to me, but I was one of those kids who always ran with scissors.

Clearly much more talented than I. I carved a mini canoe last time I was out. It even floated upright.
