After months of waiting the day has finally come, Wayne from Souris River braved the weather and pulled up near my home with a little something on board. Pretty cool seeing 30+ brand new boats all at once, well over 100k.

Got to take a look at SR’s new stealth boat, pretty sweet, it will have the Carbontec outer layup, the inner most layup is a super dark green but looks black when backed up with the carbon outer. Black anodized trim and black stained ash seats and yokes, the decals were a silver holographic type material, pretty cool. When Wayne was telling me about it I was nervous I’d want one over the one I had on the way but after seeing it I really like what I went with, just looks classy.

I can’t help but wonder what my neighbors were thinking, its not every day the folks of North Minneapolis see that kind of setup rolling thru the area.

I cant say enough good things about the folks at SR, they were very accommodating, and Wayne was extremely good at communicating with me as far as the delivery plans, he had no issues coming out of his way to basically drop it off in my back yard.

Its now safely hoisted up in the garage, I’ll take some better pics in the yard when it gets a little nicer out, kind of crappy out today.

SR Q17 in Carbontec layup, dark bronze trim and decals, looks amazing, absolutely my favorite color combo out there. Hard to see the true color of the bronze in the pics but it looks great, couldn’t be happier…. Well if it were 65-70 and the lakes were open I’d be happier! Tried to get the wife to hit the road and head south for the weekend, but after spending all week making saw sheaths and being out of town at Copia next weekend I got shot down.

got to love the factory skid plates

Congratulations Ragged! Thanks for the photos. How far south was he heading with the load? What other models did he have? Looks like a variety of models and colors.

I hope you and your wife enjoy your new canoe this year.

What a beauty get her out there and scuff her up.

It's hard to believe some people on this forum don't think that they are pretty.

I think they are one of the best looking canoes and have a lot of choices in color and materials. I love my SR Q17.

Congrats on a very sweet looking ride-I was checking that model out earlier this morning on the SR website! I love my Le Tigre Q17, and I agree with jb in the wild-they are really good looking boats.

He was headed to Milwaukee for their big sports show next weekend, then he’s going to a few more shows before returning home, I think he said he’ll be home in about a month. From the brief look I took there was one of just about everything, lots of Q17’s.

That’s crazy talk! But as with everything in life, different strokes for different folks.

Pretty awesome!

One thing that was a pleasant surprise was the color or tint on the Kevlar inside, I’m not a huge fan of yellow kev, the basic Wenonah yellow Kevlar is my least favorite. The color of the Souris kev is not as yellow and the black from the carbon darkens it even more, the inside looks allot like the Bells do on the outside, a hue I LOVE.

03/03/2012 07:27PM
Awesome! I bet you can't wait to try her out.

03/03/2012 07:43PM
She's purrrdy.

One thing though. I've always understood you should hang them upside down. When hanging all the weight is focused where the straps are, not spread evenly. I know with royalex that would deform the hull. I don't know if its still an issue with the light weight composites. I'm in the "why take a chance club"....

My SR17 is not as pretty as yours but she hangs upside down in my garage.

That brings up a good point, where are the proper places to hang them? Right now I have it hanging from the thwarts. I didn't have time to fabricate a killer pulley system so I went with a crappy $25 deal off Amazon, says it’s rated to 100lbs but I'm not going to trust it too much, I used it to lift it then I scurried up my ladder and cinched up some straps around the thwarts, then released tension on the pulleys. So the weight is all on the thwarts, I honestly don't know if that’s good or bad, can anyone weigh in on this?

I could be wrong but it seems to me that upside down would be better. Plus, all the canoe store and outfitter racks that I've seen store them upside down and I'm guessing they've probably got the best way figured out.

From what I could see from the pictures that is one sweet looking boat!

Nice garage too... I like your way of securing your man door. I'm thinking of something like that for when I'm gone so much.

Yeah that’s part of living in North Minneapolis, can never trust a deadbolt/doorframe too much, put two of those bad boys up the day I closed on the house.

I almost can't type this due to all the drool on my keyboard. She's beautiful. May you have many happy voyages together!

Ideally you want to hang the canoe hull side up with the straps or ropes directly under the thwarts. Another way is to divide the boat length in thirds and hang one third from each end. There is less stress on the hull, from what I've read, hanging this way. That and it doesn't turn into a storage area for gear like when the hull side is down. Just my .02...

The mechanical engineering side of brain is failing to understand how this would be different from hanging it from the thwarts, you are still essentially having the weight of the canoe bare down on 4 points of contact on the gunnels, weight above or below is still the same weight, the only difference is the 10lbs per point force is being transferred thru the thwart to the gunnel vs resting directly on the gunnel, that mechanical joint is plenty strong, I have a spare thwart that I ordered and its built like a brick **** house, could likely hang a couple hundred pounds off each one alone before it would bend.

Question, has anyone actually ran an FEA simulation on a canoe hull to see how different hanging points effect stress points? Would be kind of cool.

Hanging your canoe upside down does keep the raccoons from nesting there!

Nice looker there Ragged, and I bet even better on the water.

I am jealous.
Nice looking ride.

03/04/2012 05:30PM
I've always thought the reason was so that the hull could not fill up with water/snow whether from a leaky roof or if stored outdoors (bad idea with uv exposure and all but many outfitters do it for a year or three because space doesnt permit indoor storage). A hull full of water would be bad news. Plus if stored upside down you can lower it directly onto your shoulders or car;)

My thoughts exactly Ragged! If 10 lbs of weight per tie point would cause any damage, you bought the wrong canoe. But we all know you didn't.

Fun-ny... ME TOO - what a sweeeeeeeeet looking boat. Man, I keep thinking about the day I can buy WHAT I WANT from the factory and make it all mine. But looking at yours now I know maybe I better stick to used boats. I might actually start worrying about scratches if I had one that looked that nice. (OK I tried to make myself feel better, but I really don't. I'd LOVE that boat!)

Hang it upside down. Alot easier to clean the winter dust off the outside of the boat than the inside.
