How and why do you set-up your tarps/dining fly in relationship to wind direction, fire grate, and cook stove locations, and any other considerations? How many tarps do you normally carry? Post photos if available.

The biggest consideration for me is the location of available trees or branches. Then I look at the orientation of it to the lake (wind, view, etc) I will also consider the lay of the land so I can have places to sit under it if necessary. I also consider the height above the fire pit.

We usually set up a tarp not far from the fire pit. If we can have logs to sit on underneath that is best. We carry a Noah16 and 1 or 2 of those woven polyethylene tarps. The poly tarps are used to cover gear or as ground cloths since they are no so reliable.
I just bought a guide gear 12x12. Haven't used it yet, but not sure if I am going to keep for my hammock or not. I'll still haul the Noah in because it is just so big and versatile.

Available trees are the biggest factor. I prefer the tarp rig close to the fire. If its a twin tarp rig I like to get it right up to the grate if I can. Most of the time I bring two (mine are both 10x12) tarps, I like to have options.

Of course if the perfect tree isn't there you can always use your rod case...
