Is there such a thing as the best Canoe Back Rest? I have tried the Sit Backer and Crazy Creek. I do not like the metal frame of the Sit Backer and the Crazy Creek seems to deform in use. I am looking for a good one to use in a solo canoe.

Those seem to be the standards. There is also a plastic coleman model out there.

Eds canoe has some wood ones that look decent but I have no experience with them

I have the same feelings about those other canoe seats so I ordered one of these . I haven't used it yet but is sure seems like a good product. I'll probably get around to installing it tomorrow.

BD,
Make one the way you like it to be... that is what I did!

It fits on the back and under the seat and give me plenty of support.

I tend to kneel more than I used to so don't use a back support as often. When I'm fishing a lot, THEN I really like these. One is Ed's I believe and the other is an Old Town. About the same IMHO. Here's a pic. TW

I use the plastic Coleman backrest every once in a while. IMO, it's dead weight if I'm on a normal (for me) trip but if I'm base camping, it's great for leisurely paddling and fishing.

The Winona Bucket Seat Backband is what I have used for about 7 years and I really like it. It tends to slide down a bit, but it gives a lot of lower back support. Stays attached to the canoe while portaging and is lightweight. I purchased a tractor seat pad for the seat. It felt nice, but my seat on my old Sayer Sportsman is a little bigger than the standard ones now. It did fit, but tore the seam out. It was replaced with no problem, but it will probably happen again. Look for something similar that has the seat cushion attached would be nice.

Good luck

Sturdy, that is for sure (also branded as Pelican). Don't bring them to BW, but if I needed a backrest, that's what I'd use. My crazy creek also sits in the garage.

I'm very happy with this one - Backsaver by Cushgear.
Good support and comfort, very light, strong, adjustable in height and recline.

We-no-nah Super Seat- comfy for the bum, hits the back nicely, stays on while portaging... We really like it!

I always sit in the back seat of the canoe and what I use is my 5 gallon bucket, it has worked in several different type of canoes I put a gamma seal it, I store my tackle box in it plus alot of other items plus you have a good seat for cooking at camp. you can kinda see in the picture what I'm talking about

Good work, looks like you could build something similar to that out of pvc as well.

If you know a welder, light weight aluminum would be best probably. PVC might bend too much. The wood I used was Ash, and while you can't see it in this picture I had to add a bolt through the back of the "C" area where it holds to the seat to keep the "C" from splitting due to pressure as you lean back. I also use a BDB or a peice of string to tie it on in the front.

I do not use a seat cushion and this back rest works well for me. I patterned it after a few I saw on the internet and they wanted more money than I was going to spend. I had the wood, and the straps cost me about $7.00 so it was a cheap fix.
