Check out this new canoe crossover from Wenonah

Canak 16

http://www.wenonah.com/products/template/product_detail.php?IID=245&SID=e04e5131666628b1375479367aff0df7

the advertisment I saw on it stated that they designed it specifically for BWCA and portaging. Hull shape of the prism. Covered bow and stern compartments. . .but both can be fully opened up for easy access. Weighs just 38 lbs.

now if i can just win the lottery

Has anybody here tripped in one or even just paddled one? I wonder if any outfitters will rent them.

I thought I read somewhere that Lynn from VNO has one and used it on a solo recently.

Piragis has two on the racks -one with red deck, one with green.

Kind of looks like you sit down low like a kayak? but a Prism hull? the picture of the guy paddling looks odd to me - too high for a kayak but the boat looks low. I wish the portage pic was lighter, like to see the yoke used.

Interesting.

I'm thinking that if I want a decked canoe, I'd go with a Rob Roy. But what do I know.

the difference is a Rob Roy has a solid top. the Wenonah has basically open top with neoprene covers. Portaging the Wenonah would be no different then a typical canoe in that you just slip of the covers and lift out the gear.

I would also add a spray skirt for the cockpit if one was offered.

It's kinda cool. I hate to admit it (being a Bell snob and all) but I prefer the look of it to the Rob Roy. It is slightly on the heavy side for a solo though. At 38 lbs it's 4lbs heavier than a Prisim, and 6 pounds more than a Magic.

I paddle something similar, only it's a convertible. I mostly keep the top up though!

The Rob Roy seat is like a kayak, on the floor. Looks like the Canak has a pedestal seat just like the Prism.

The seat looks to be too high to be a true kayak. Looks like a prism with some covering. Why bother? If they lowered the seat I might be interested.

It's actually a cut down prism. The bow and stern are at least 2 inches lower than a prism.

She used a Vagabond on her September solo.

Ken, Do you have to unsnap everything and get the gear out and then re-snap everything when portaging? Is it much of a pain? How hard is it to put the snaps on the canoe? Did you do it yourself?
Thanks,

The new design looks cool, but I get clostrophobic and don't like hemmed in. So I would have to stick with a canoe. I need room to move around and have a little freedom in the cockpit.
Looks like a good ship though.

To me it appears he is digging black flies out of his mouth and nose. :-)

Butthead, I dig that lid you're wearing.

Just a few snaps need be undone [3/4] one one side to remove my pack in back. The front pack slide in from the seat area. Cover stays on while portaging except in heavy rain. No pain!

Laid out on canoe.
Taped down to mark snap positions.
Holes drilled, snaps pop-riveted, job done!

jb; Mick, in the red Prism is chewing his cigar!

I am seriously looking at ordering a cover for my Wenonah Vagabond. for those of you who have them, what convinced you to get one? Have you capsized with one on? How easy to get on and off/

I have a Prism and have also paddled the Canak. I see no reason to buy this hybrid. The seat height is the same as the Prism and paddles very much like it. People who like the low seat placement of a true kayak and back support will be put off by this. I would rather put a spray skirt on my Prism than buy this boat.

Bang, I have a Prism too, and what you say makes sense. But I can see the advantage in windy conditions. Losing a few inches of sheer line, along with making it a completely decked boat, could make windy/wavy conditions much easier and safer to paddle in.

Read about them in some paddling books, sounded like a good idea for wilderness style trips. Rolled once unintentionally. Cover worked like a charm keeping the canoe from filling. Rolled right over and back upright, took in only a few inches of water [I had the cockpit area reefed back]. Takes about a minute to put on, at portages I undo just enough snaps to get the back pack out. Just a few seconds added to unload the canoe. I will take it of if I'm portaging in heavy rain, the water will run down the side of the canoe between the canoe and the cover. The biggest benefit is the reduction in wind effect on the canoe. Makes paddling on a windy day much less work!
