I had heard good things about the Katadyn Extream water bottle filters but never got around to buying one. So when Katadyn updated their bottle filters I had to have one.

Katadyn MyBottle filter at REI

My experience with Katadyn (previously Pur) products has been great. I had used a Pur Guide and Katadyn Hiker. I have also been lucky enough to use the new Basecamp gravity filters and love them (I will be buying my own before my next group trip). When I accidentally broke the handle on my Guide filter it was very convenient to get a replacement part from the US headquarters of Katadyn in Plymouth, MN.

The MyBottle uses similar filter elements to the Extream line in a more durable, ergonomic and convenient package. The MyBottle is available as: 1) a drinking bottle with straw like a camelbak bottle/nalgene without filter, 2) a filter which eliminates particles, most bacteria and cysts (Giardia and Crypto) and 3) a purifier which adds virus protection to the filter model. For my purposes-primarily BWCA and North American wilderness tripping-the filter is perfect. If traveling in areas where water is more prone to viral contamination the purifier would be prefered but the elements are interchangeable so if you buy the "filter model" now you could upgrade to the purifier model later as needed.

The MyBottle filter (or purifier) is not intended to process large volumes of water and probably is not well suited to use as your only water treatment modality for trips longer than a day. The MyBottle holds ~750mL. I believe the filter element (micron filter plus carbon element for flavor/polishing) is rated for 155 bottle fills but this may be reduced depending on the quality of the input water. My intended use for the MyBottle is a on-the-go easy to access water source. Dip it in the lake (preferably not a scummy beaver pond) to refill and keep moving without stopping to pump water. Squeeze and suck to get a sip. I keep it in my thwart bag but want to find a bike water bottle cage to attach it to the underside of my canoe seat. The MyBottle filter worked perfectly on my recent trip to Woodland Caribou Provincial Park and I look forward to using it in the future. It seems to me like the perfect compliment to a Basecamp filter. For short solo trips I will likely carry it along with some backup Micropur tabs. My cooking water is boiled for sterilization (but there is no reason you couldn't squeeze water from the MyBottle into a pan or another drinking bottle for that matter).

Thanks, TG, for the great review. This bottle filter is on my list for my next canoe trip to avoid having to dig my big filter out of the portage pack on long days.
