liked the AA spec, thought twice about 2 hours, but really since I use a flashlight for about 2 MINUTES per night (max), it would get me quite a lot of nights... add to that the rechargeable AAs that are used in my SteriPen and my Camera and I can leverage those across devices in case of emergency (plus I do bring some spares).
Not in need of a headlamp at the moment, but decided the 2 hour thing wasn't a big deal for my style camping. Once I did go on a 3 mile hike at midnight where you needed a headlamp to avoid the roots and rocks underfoot... probably would have wanted a spare battery along on that adventure, but not for camping in general.

If it's a 1 Watt bulb and running off 1AA battery that makes some sense. Watts = Volts x Amps and a typical alkaline AA battery has a charge of about 2500 mAhr and 1.5V. So if you fill in the formula:
1 Watt = 1.5V x (2500mAhr)/t and then solve for t you get approximately 3.75 hours. Of course that formula doesn't account for inefficiencies (although it should be pretty efficient if it's an LED).
But to answer the question my Petzl Tikka Plus 2 is 50 lumens and will run for 80 hours (140 hours on the lower power). Of course I don't know how many lumens 1 Watt translates to for this particular lamp.

I own both the Rayovac light and the Petzl Ticca 2. You get what you pay for. The Rayovac also gives off a halo ring which I don't like. The Petzl is much brighter & lasts longer. If you want an inexpensive light the Rayovac will do the job. If you want a better built, rugged, brighter light....go with Petzl.

I picked up the petzl e + lite. I do alot of hiking and the idea of a battery that can store for 10 years, a system that can get wet, and is light is perfect for my needs. Check it out at the link below. The added whistle in the cinch is nice for calling the dog back or emergencies.

I bought a similar one at Target a few years back. It's by Energizer and runs for a lot longer on 3 AAA batteries. Best yet, it has two modes, white lights and red. The red preserves your night vision and is great for midnight potty breaks.

Thanks Kanoes, this one looks cool. I have an Energizer like advicepig mentions that I like a lot, but I might give this one a look.
