Has anyone ever tried to rig up a sail for their canoe? A buddy of mine is going to try and rig one up for this Spring.

I have never been fortunate to have a tail wind, it seems the wind is always at my face.
I have heard a mechanical sail is against the regulations but a temporary one with a tarp or over-sized poncho might not break the rules. Some have even put their canoes together like a catamaran and used a tarp between them.

I agree you NEVER have a tail wind in the BW. He mainly wants it for trolling so that he doesn't have to paddle and can still move the 2mph for a good trolling speed. I never thought about it being against the rules, I'll have to look into that for him.

I am too lazy to look for you but I am pretty sure it is against the rules. Please let everyone know what you find.

This was discussed at some length a year or so ago. Do a search and you might find the thread.

Since we paddle Quetico most of the time, I actually called Quetico HQ and asked the question. They told me that an improvised sail is no problem and store-bought sails are not allowed.

We used to improvise with a poncho ...here is a picture from around 1963....that's fishguts in the red shirt.

I made one out of a blue tarp and two long poles that we found in the woods. We used it on Pine lake, it worked good, the wind was strong that day.

quote fishguts: "We used to improvise with a poncho ...here is a picture from around 1963....that's fishguts in the red shirt. "

Still laughing about the view

Hey! when you get a free sail across a big lake the view comes secondary.....It was my Grandfather's idea, he was always up for any sailing that could be had........I haven't done this in years.

Fishguts, I'm sure it beat paddling. I bet the view off to the sides and back were great.
