What is your favorite lightweight backpacking cookset? Do any of the cooksets include the baking sheet style pan for on the fire grate, or do you use something different for over the fire?

Mr Walleye,
In order to answer with some accuracy...We would need to know how many you are planning on in your group? Because different styles of stuff is designed for different group size. I got some idea;s for you but are you talking 1, 2, 3, 7 or what size group? and how long you gonna be out? and what type of meals are you looling at. The kind that just add water? or do you plan on some fresh food and real eggs? or what? So give a liitle more info and we will do our best to give you some suggestions.

This is what I use and like it alot.

For solo canoeing and hiking I really don't cook just boil water and mix with instant dehydrated dinners. For that I use a Jetboil and think this is great !

For a dinner for two, mostly one pot meals I use a MSR Blacklite two quart pot. For a stove I'll use either a MSR Windpro or a Brunton Raptor. I've been very pleased with both stoves.

Ditto on the jetboil for solo tripping.

I have an old czech military cookset(2 nesting alum pots & a fry pan lid) and the Brunton raptor burner (or Svea123) for groups of two or more. Don't do a lot of cooking beyond freezer bag meals, Mountain house dinners, and pre-prepared soup & stews (car camping). I rarely use a fire for cooking anymore, but the old cookset does just fine and shines right back up with a little steel wool and soap.Think I bought the cookset for about $6 at cheaperthandirt.com. A double sheet of heavy alum foil works just fine over a fire grate.

SC is right, the number of folks and the menu items will determine what's best.

For solo I also just use one titanium pot. Boil water, and add meal. I keep it very simple.

I use a MSR Blacklite Set I have put together I actually bought two sets 1.5L,2L, with lid and handle. + 3L, and 4L Plus lid and Handle.
Then I nested em all together they come with a drawstring bag. Utilize all of them for large group (Like 6) or pick and choose for small group the piece's we need. I also bought the blacklite frypan which also nestles into the set.
Can Nestle the Stove and a Canister of Gas in the Middle of the set with the handles.

For Solo will take Blacklite Fry Pan,2 Liter Pot and Snow Peak Titanium Bowl. Cook with Brunton Raptor.

May want to check the MSR stuff out as many places discountinuing this set, and going to newer stuff..so priced right, right now.

We only bring in pasta/rice packs that just need water or milk. We usually have 6 guys. One of the guys has an older MSR set and we have had issues with the pan handler slipping off of the pot when taking it off the grate.

This looks like a better pan handler than the one he had.
