My dad wants an electric knife sharpener for Christmas. Anyone used one?

I haven't heard much about electric knife sharpeners on the knife-related forums.

My advice would be to get him a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Its ceramic rods provide a simple and VERY effective sharpening system.

I second kennk suggestion as it is a very effective sharpening system.

Cooks Illustrated tested them some time ago. I believe the winner was:
Chef's Choice 110 Professional Diamond Hone Sharpener
About $90.

Kendra, just to be clear, does he want a sharpener for an electric knife or an electric sharpener?

I have used this for my kitchen knifes, Chefs Choice
Work well for thin blades, fast sharp edge.
I still prefer to use a stone on my sheath and pocket knifes and now use these,
DMT Sharpeners

Kendra, When you get him a sharpner...let us know later how he like it. As I really need one and would be interested in how the one you choose works out?

SunCatcher, I ended up getting my Dad the Chef's Choice Diamond Hone No. 120. He called yesterday and said he had sharpened 22 knives and was looking for more. He said the knives get real sharp and was happy to see the sharpener took off very little of the blade. Sometimes my Dad has trouble running a toaster so it must be user friendly. I think I will have to barrow it. Good luck in your sharpener search.
