I have a F150 and want to hall a couple canoes but dont want to spend a ton of money. Is there away to make the rack that would hold the canoes above the cab. Or a link to buying some if not to expensive.

I have a yakima Rack that goes across the roof of the pickup (one bar)
and the other goes in the 2" reciever hitch and forms a y at the back of the truck. I like everything about it except when the back rack is in you can't open the tailgate. Other than that, you can easily haul two canoes very safely. We are 10 hours from BWCA and they ride fine. If I can find a pic I'll send it to you.

This rack is simply angle iron bolted to my tool box. On the roof, I use a 2x4 resting on foam blocks. Very inexpensive.
The Magic has no 2x4 under it. I added a longer cross bar to the rear rack than shown in these pics, and raised it slightly for the 2x4.

I have a home made version of this rack:

I made mine out of wood and picked up suction cups at the hardware store. The strap goes through the truck cab. It's not an elegant setup, but it's rock solid.
Like someone mentioned above, I have a "T" shaped rack that slips in my hitch receiver. Racks like that have a little side to side play, but it's not a problem.

I have a new rack in the front for carrying the canoe farther forward when I have a fifth wheel trailer attached. I did not show it because it is only good for one canoe at a time. The previous setup is good for two canoes.

This is my pick-up rack. I just toss this in the back of the truck behind the wheels. I tie down to the truck itself and not just the rack. For the cab I have a bar that hooks to the gutters. I had to buy a couple of 2"x3"-6's. Usually my projects like this are all from dumpster diving.

these look complicated and a bit difficult.
I'd also like to be able to haul my canoe (or two) on my pickup, but haven't figured out a good way.
Right now I'm limited to either sticking to kayaks, or take the top off the jeep and use that (which works great, but has obvious disadvantages.)

Unas - that looks very much like the rig I used to use in the back of my pickup...minus the white lattice. Nice touch!
