I'm looking for pictures of the homemade reflector ovens. I can't seem to find the pictures someone had posted a while ago.

Oven I made for some Q-trips in the 80's, 3 stainless steel cookie sheets, an old oven rack, and some hinges. Folded flat and strapped under a canoe seat for travel.

Here are a couple of pics of my Old Scout reflector oven in action. I enjoy using it on a BW trip, it adds a neat element to camping...

Cowdoc,
That looks like a perfect setup.I like the fold back top. Is there any way you can give dimensions and instructions for making one like it. I'd love to make one for my trip up this year.

Sure. I'll e-mail you the specs. Did you look in lilcowdocs photos to see the tab that holds the bottom reflector in place. Also, here is the side rail that holds the cooking tray in place.

I think lilcowdoc's would work for me best. There is only two of us and the smaller size makes more sense. Looks like you put alot of thought and planning into it.

This thread is inspiring me to build one of these to try. What's the size of panels or a general dimensions on one of these?
Will galvanized metal work or not recommended?

get a 8-10 baking pan and figure dimensions off of that. IMO.

You can find plans in pdf on the internet if you search for "Kraiker oven." This is the one I made and it works great for me.

My experience with reflector ovens has not been great. It seems to take FOREVER. Did I skip class on the wrong day?

With reflector ovens, it's all about the fire. You need flames and the those flames need to be relatively high like beginging at the bottom of the food shelf. The best fuel is pencil diameter wood a little more than a foot long. For the BWCA I feed the fire through the top of the grate so that the wood stays (and burns) upright. That keeps your flames high. With that set up your food should bake as quickly as a household oven.

If you have a low fire, or even worse, coals, it can take a very long time.

Thanks everyone for the info. Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I couldn't find the thread so I thought no one had replied. Cowdoc could you e-mail me the specs also?

Sure....I'll e-mail you and get your address. It is easier for me to draw it out and snail mail it.

Cowdoc,
Any chance I could get a copy of those plans too? I'm not sure how to private message people on this forum so I'll follow your lead.
