My first BWCA trip and portage will be in August. For the Lake 1-2 portage would I be better off in the Chota's if I can get out of the canoe without soaking the boots? I have my own Kevlar canoe so I will not park it on the rocks.

Agreed.

Chotas and tall boots are too hot.

I'd wear hiking boots that will get wet but they will dry pretty well by next morning.

Have a pair of tennis shoes, Keens or other sandals to change into as soon as you make camp and put the hikers out in the sun and breeze (assuming there is some and it's not raining) to dry.

Be careful with the term Chota - they sell a whole range of boots - the Quetico Trekkers are definately not too hot for summer wear.
Chota paddling boots

Usual disclaimers Bearman - If you have your own Kevlar canoe and want to take care of it, forget trying to keep your feet dry. From the stern, I routinely get out in thigh deep water to keep the canoe off the rocks.

We wet foot it in the warm weather and wear Slomons Water shoes. I used to wear high boots and they always got wet,and they don't drain so your stuck sloshing all day. These drain out quick and wear forever.

Nice shoes. The Lake 1-2 portage is not bad I heard so it should not be to hard on the ankles and ankle support should not be needed?

I have a pair of Columbia Aquatooth's they run about $65 and worked awsome up there. I wore them with Smart Wool socks and was comfortable all week.

Ankle support? Now that's almost a topic of it's own. I have been on many Quetico and BWCA Trips and never had a twisted ankle. Others (Wearing ankle support) sprain an an on a simple portage...??? I have seen bad sprains in high top boots and low cut tennis shoes.

My son and I don't seem to be prone to ankle sprains....maybe it's from all the walking on river bars we do out here in Oregon during Steelhead and Salmon season ?????

We wear the low top Solomons Water type shoe and have no problems.
