Here are some of the bigger Sturgeon we hooked the last couple of weeks on the Rainy River. The old man kicked my butt both trips but I don't mind netting 60"+ fish! The 53"er was our first tagged fish we have caught. BW fishing is only a few weeks away!

My dad or the fish? :)

Based on the info below...

The 55"ers are around 40 pounds and 28 years old.
The 61" x 24.5" was around 60 pounds and 35 years old (night pic)
The 63" was around 64 pounds and 37-38 years old

I just started targeting them the last 2-3 years. It can be some slow fishing with 14-15 hour days in the boat but one bounce of the rod tip and all hell breaks loose! My dad hooked that 61" in the tail...never heard 65lb PowerPro sing like it did. We pulled the anchors and got on the trolling motor to catch up to it. Thought we had a 70"er on. :)

Mag-nice work!

A buddy and I fished up there a couple weeks ago and had a blast targetting Sturgeon for the first time. We hit some brutal cold weather and didn't catch any monsters-55' being the largest. But we also got a tagged fish. I submitted the tag number to the dnr and a week or two later got a neat email outlining my fish's history. Its crazy but its been caught four times since tagging-all in the same location (prolly withing 1/4 mile) during the same first couple weeks in April.

Rainy river Sturgeon is a comeback success. It was interesting the early logging years with the river full of logs the bark and wood products covered the bottom of the river, thus preventing the Sturgeon from spawning. That has changed and with strict harvest regulation they have made a comeback just in recent years.

Quite a fish,and nice pictures.

Always wanted to go Sturgeon lake in Quetico and catch a Sturgeon by canoe.

That looks like a bunch of fun. We tried it once, landed only one, but it was interesting anyway.

Yes it is. We registered the tag number and it was caught twice before. Once in the river and once on the Canadian side of LOTW.
