The 10 channel cats on the Sauk River excited me more...

Is this going to cause a big stir?

I'm also glad this passed. A stir? Maybe...but does a group of four need 24 walleyes? :)

I'm torn on this, sometimes I'm not sure the "problem" is as big as they think, also for a lake that size I feel like fishing pressure is low. I think I would have been more pleased with a 4 fish limit, 17-19 is going to be tricky on that lake for sure. I still think many of the issues just have to do lakes going through cycles and not anything to do with angling pressure, that and spoiled fisherman being use to stocked small lakes with limited structure and easy to find eyes, not the case up there.

I don't drive 300 miles to catch little walleyes, so as far as I'm concerned it doesn't cause a stir. After discovering Sag last year I'd say my main reason for going again is the "trophy" potential. Give me just one 30 incher inhaling the jig and I'll be a happy man! I can catch eaters much closer to home. As to whether the regulation will make any significant change in Sag or Seagull I have no idea because I'm not familiar enough with the present fish population and size structure to make an opinion. From what I've experienced I'd say Sag is more of a quality lake than a quantity lake. I'm anxious to learn more in the future and am already dreaming of open water up there!

You got that right. I base camped there last year and between my grandpa and I we only caught four bass and a baby pike- but they were HUGE bass. Plenty of room for them to hide and grow.

i wish they would do that statewide and up the 1 over 20" to 23" ? the local lake i fish often(waconia) has had a 16" minimum for 20 years+ it has been good for this lake. and like carmike stated how much do you need. even if your only with 1 other person 6 walleyes 12 filets, that isnt enough .

I don't want to comment on these lakes until I look at lake surveys etc..

But would like to say as people get more efficient in fishing by knowledge, locators, better boats etc.. and the time to fish it is putting more and more stress on fish populations.

Time flies but I have friends who fished Sag years ago they had to get there by going up the Gunflint on a bumpy gravel road.Early on they said fishing pressure was low until word got out on the big walleyes between Sea Gull and Sag.,than that specific area became a circus in the spring.

Well, your friends will be happy to hear the Gunflint is still BUMPY:) As for the fishing, I've heard what a "circus" it is in the area you mention, but was pleasantly surprised last spring that it wasn't as bad as I've imagined...and WAY LESS pressure than other areas of the state by a huge margin, take Red Wing, Mille Lacs, Minnetonka or any of the other big name fishing destinations where you wait sometimes hours to launch your boat. Sag wasn't bad at all and the good news is there's a lot of water to explore if you think the river is too busy.

The river(Sag-Sea Gull) in recent years has been closed to protect spawning walleyes opening weekend. That is where the state record was taken still full of eggs.

I guess it all depends on your style, I personally don't eat hardly any fish while camping, most often none. Between all the extra crap to bring and the time making and cleaning up I just don't do it anymore, too much time lost that could be spent on the water fishing. So I don't feel guilty at all taking a 5 day trip and bringing back 6 fish for the wife and kid at home, that's just about a fish a day. This is true of most of the guys I go with. I actually eat much more fish on canoe trips as I can offset food pack weight.

I guess I'll just have to pull out of Sag early and put in for a few hours elsewhere along the Gunflint if I want to bring 6 back, sounds like a win-win.

i believe i read on the posted signs no fishing till june 1st in that stretch ? and they started posting that area early 90's, also they(dnr) use to post on an innertube/sign where alpine flows into seagull pre 1996, after the motors were restricted i guess they didnt feel like paddling to the west side to put the sign in place or retrieve it.
