It is no secret that the walleye fishing is tough on Big Sag. Yea the big ones are there but the population of smaller fish is down. The MN DNR may impose a slot limit to prove the fishing but that will take time.

I may have to find another walleye lake near by to fish. There is a small portage to get into Northern Lights lake from Big Sag. Can a motor boat get through there? Is there a rail portage?

It's been a long time since I've been there and don't remember much, but I have been up to Sag a bunch in the past few years and all the guys I run into that fish NL "keep" a boat there, so my guess is there is no super easy way in or they wouldn't go to the trouble of running multiple boats.

There is not a rail portage. Trafalgar Bay is a great fishery. I'm not sure what you have for a boat but it is easy enough for a few guys to get my 14' aluminum boat and 25 hp 2-stroke in there. If you like to camp on Sag which is very understandable there are other day trip options with a canoe for nice walleyes as well.

I have never been there. But on the Fisher map, there is a road going to the East End of Northern Light lake. Called the Northern Light Lake Road. With a campground marking on the end of it. Just a thought I guess.

Can anyone here chip in and tell me some successful spots to fish for walleye on Big Sag? Grandpa and I were so bummed this year.

In exchange for that, I'll tell you my secret bass spot on Sag that I discovered this year when base camping there.
