I had someone tell me about a fish finder to use in a canoe but I don't remember the name. Can anyone give me a decent cheaper brand to use?

I like the Lowrance X-4. It doesn't draw much power so battery draw is lower than many fishfinders but it still has many excellent features found on more expensive models.

Lowrance x-4 or hummingbird piranhamax's are a good place to start looking. Cheap and easy to modify the power supply. Lots of threads here on tricking them out. Here's one for batteries.

Mine is the Humminbird PiranhaMAX 210 Portable, now discontinued. Fairly compact, batteries last many days' outings, transducer shoots through the hull or the suction cup works fine, too. The ones Humminbird sells these days as "portable" come in a bulkier soft case. Lots of threads here on how to modify a standard unit for use in the BW.

I just bought the Lowrance X-4 Pro for about $85 at Mills Fleet Farm. Same as the X-4 but with a little wider viewing angle. Looking forward to getting it fitted for my canoe.
