I am heading into Wood Lake with 3 boys - 8yrs. old and under. If anyone has any fishing reports or spots that they would be willing to share I would be grateful. You can email me or post it here....

I know there are fish in there; walleyes, bass, and lots of little pike that would be fun for the kids, too. I've even caught sunfish by the weeds there. I think if I were you I'd scout out a good shore fishing spot (there is a cool little rock island in the narrows that you could fish from) and then I'd set up the boys with slip-bobbers and leeches. In my opinion, it would be more fun and productive--and safer--than trying to fish from the canoe. You could do like three bobbers and one casting rod and they could take turns casting and you could do rock/paper/scissors for whose turn it is on bobber bites. Bring bug spray and snacks. have fun, you are a courageous dude.

I didn't mean to make myself sound like a hero - there are actually 2 of us that are each bringing our sons. Last year it was 2 boys, this year is 3 boys, next year will probably be 4 boys. They are reminding us constantly that the Dad's have an annual spring BWCA trip so they should get one too. We are obliging and bringing our kids on a kid's trip where it is all about them. Once we are in the BWCA, we let them make the choices about where we go, when we go, what we eat, etc..... We just try to have a little knowledge about where we are going beforehand so we can provide great experiences for them when they decide they want to fish.
Thanks for the info though - that is what I was looking for - where to go and fish for a while. The kids fish just fine in the canoes but shore spots where we can catch fish from shore are much more fun for them. The boys have been talking about a walleye supper for a while now so we need to find a couple walleyes to eat.
Thanks

Just came out of Wood on the 17th. Walleye were tough going. Tuesday night (13th) it got down to 37. Then I notice a mayfly hatch on Wednesday/Thursday. Three of us caught 6 walleye from 13th to 17th. Did catch some 5 lb smallmouth and a boatload of NP--- 20 to 30 inch.Caught smallmouth on top water baits. used the tackle box and leeches for walleye. Northern hit about anything. Good luck did see a pair of swans, and a bald eagle kept us compant on a nearby tree.

Wood lake is a great fishing lake, in my opinion one of the better ones with easy access in the BWCA. It has nice northerns (lots of little ones but lots of big ones too!), walleyes, bass, and some tremendous panfish action.

The only drawback to camping with kids on Wood Lake, is that it is very weedy, and thus not any really nice swimming holes. I might suggest a day trip up to Indiana Lake (nice large mouth and small mouth fishing). Indiana is a beautiful clear lake, with some nice spots for swimming! Plus watching the schools of suckers swimming around below you is pretty cool!

I was at Wood lake this June. Fishing was great. Lots of structure in this lake. Have the boys throw their line near some of the logs and rocks in the lake, they will catch something. I was catching smallmouth Bass and northern Pike near the steam that comes into the lake across from the island campsite, and I started to catch jumbo perch. They were 12-14 inches! Huge, I had never caught jumbo perch that big, plus, there are walleye and some nice sized crappie if you can find them. Good luck

I'll echo that- in fact, Pinepatch, I think my son and I may have talked to you on our way by your site, that is if you were the group camped on the narrows (we exited on the 16th). My son and I had good action for Pike just off the east end of the big island in the north/nw part of the lake. Its pretty deep north of there, and every time we drifted towards the point and through the quick depth change, we caught 1 or 2. Nothing big, but kept him busy. As far as walleye, we only the one day on Wood, but our group of 4 only managed to catch one. We didn't try to find panfish, but I know they are in there.

I just got back - the northerns are everywhere and will hit all the typical northern lures and then some. I only caught one little walleye - although we didn't spend much time fishing for them other than slip bobbers with leeches from camp.
The lake looks like an awesome fishing lake - rocks, weeds, and timber everywhere. If I go back it will probably be in the spring or later in the fall to focus on walleyes when they will be a lot easier to fish for.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
