My friend and I are going to the south kawishiwi river in mid june. Was reading about lures to bring. I've been reading a lot of reviews on the salmo hornet and how awesome it is. Wondering if anyone used it at the boundary waters, what color and what size. thanks!!
Hi B-Mac - welcome to the site. Yes. I bought a floating Salmo Hornet 5 a couple years back in red tail shiner color (blue top, silver body, red tail). Really did well on the Smallies in moving water on the Granite River. I like the floating so I can stop my retrieve when I hit a rock and let if float up. Also had good luck with a Cotton Cordell jointed grappler in Pearl Cisco color; similar color to the Dace by Salmo. Also liked the Rapala x-rap pop; fun to cast out and "pop-pop" as it floats with the current.
Those are my main three when fishing the BW. Not that I don't also love and throw the other dozens of lures.
Good luck.
One more cast...
