Coach, haven't been here recently, but was in the area in mid-May a couple of years ago & had some luck with yellow twister tails in 8-12' of water during the day & evening. I'd presume they're going to be a little deeper now.
We came out on Tuesday up the Gunflint Trail. The bugs were non-existent on 5/24/07 when we went in, noticeable after the rain on 5/26/07, & by the time we exited on 5/30/07 were miserable. Especially the black flies. I picked up a number of bites the last night out in the canoe. We picked up a few ticks too, but only during a bushwhack through some areas with tall grasses, never on the portages or camp.
Our group was there last year. We were at the island on Gabbro on the South, but middle,of the lake.Off the point fishing from shore, facing east off the island, caught a few norhterns and one smallie. If the wind is right, shouldnt have a problem with bugs, nice open areas.
Fished both lakes last year, the only area of Bald Eagle we fished with the SE corner near the mouth of the Isabella River, and in the river itself, caught more pike than we could count, and a few huge smallies as well. Walleyes can be caught between the two lakes, or off the island campsite at the SE end of Gabro. We also caught quite a few pike in Gabro.
I had great luck with a buzz bait on Bald Eagle, on Gabro we used tube baits or other crayfish imitators and did well on the pike, also used white Senkos with success.
