Any thoughts on leeches vs crawlers in late July? I see lots of folks talking about leeches but I thought the summer pattern for eyes is crawlers.

I always bring and use both. Sometimes after you have caught a few walleyes on leeches you can switch to crawlers and catch a few more. Also, a big crawler is a nice big piece of meat that big walleyes seem very willing to grab at times. Last year over half of my big releases came on crawlers, and my personal best walleye came on a crawler a few years ago.

I bring both. To be honest, I think they are equally effective. From day to day and trip to trip, you may see a little difference.

A lot of guys on here knock crawlers for their durability. I don't buy into that. We took 6 dozen up last year in the middle of August, and they were jyst fine. Just keep them out of the sun. They do, however, take up a little more room.

Do you take them in styrafoam containers to help insulate and keep them from being crushed?

I take Leeches, easier to keep alive.

If you take in crawlers dont forget to kill them rather than dumping them on land before you leave if you have extras

Take both. I do most of my walleye fishing in ottertail county so that is the "calendar" I go by. That much farther north to me tells me leeches could still be good. Last august we had both and did well on each. If you can paddle fast enough I suggest pulling some shad raps along the weedlines starting late July up there.
Take the styrofoam for crawlers and use a leech bucket.
