The largemouth bass is not actually a black bass, or a bass at all, as are the various members of the true bass family, which include striped bass and white bass. It is however, the largest memeber of the sunfish family, related to such other popular sunfish as the bluegill and crappie.

Smallmouth bass and Rock bass are not bass either but part of the same sunfish family.

Yes they are classified in different families, but both the sunfish family and true bass (temperate bass) family are part of the Percoidea superfamily. One of the largest groups of fish.
