I use my legs.

Legs again----end of rod behind one ankle and just above real part of the rod across opposite shin. The fish will often hook themselves. I once considered bringing a rod holder but am sure glad I didn't.

I should note that as a common trolling technique.

The many advantages of a rod holder become obvious when you use one. I use Lock-Tite holders.

I love the one sold by Piragis. Used it many years. Easy to release the rod when a fish is on. Will order another one this year to give to my grandson who will be going with us this year.

Tried a rod holder I hated it. I am a legs man also.

I am a foot guy. Tried a rod holder once. Foot was way better.

I'm a foot guy too, takes too long to get it out of the rod holder sometimes and you miss fish. There is no delay when using the foot from the stern.

I use the piragis rod holder. Love it. But it will not work on certain canoes (at least we couldn't find a place for them on a Souris River we rented ...) so they may or may not work for you. I haven't lost fish with them, because so far, anything that hits it while I'm paddling around has struck HARD. I usually have to use my hookout to get the lure out of the fish.

I use a pair of removable, quick-release rod holders from Cabelas. I mounted the permanent bases in the gunwale. They are especially nice when trolling over long distance. Plus you can adjust the angle and direction pretty easily. I like that they put the rod tip further from the side of the canoe, than can the pit of my knee. I also like to use them when I need both hands to re-tie another rig, or eat a sandwhich. The picture also works for the Man's Best Friend thread.

That being said, I use my leg for shorter duration because it is more sensitive and quicker than the rod holder.

Leg and Foot. I always think about bringing a rod holder, but I bring too much fishing stuff as it is.

+1 on the Piragis rod holder. I use one and love it. I used to be a leg/knee guy, but I move my legs around too much and it was getting annoying. With this I set it and forget it. Can also vouch for the way the fish hammer the lure. Hands and legs free now, I'll never go back.

A must! I added a thwart ahead of the bow paddler and another one at arms length in front of the stern paddler. To those I mearly cut a wedge shape block of wood from a 2x4 and cut a 6" length of 1 1/2" dia pvc pipe. With the block & pvc in place atop the thwart I drilled two holes through the thwart, block & pvc. Attach with small pan head screw, lock washer and wing nut. Easy, portable and cheap.

The bow thwart combined with the center thwart allows me to weave enough thin dia. rope to support a portable depth finder.

Scotty 389. This is the plastic version, a little lighter and worth the weight. Never lost a rod from it. Can't say the same without it.

I use the Scotty 230 Power Lock. Made a bracket w/ wingnuts so I can attach it to any thwart or the bow. The holder can be taken off the base for easier portaging on overgrown trails.

Nice, why didn't I think of that. I may steal your idea.
