How do you find / recognize a sunken Island with a depth finder? Is there an immediate depth change? How come they are not shown on contours (or are they). Thanks!

Paddling in 30 feet of water, then 10 feet of water, then 30 feet of water.

Buy a McKenzie Map, and a 1/2 oz jig head to find them after looking at the map. No batteries or pack space required.

Do your homework now...find contour changes on maps NOW, have targets in mind. Also, we troll 1/2oz. jigs with 3-4in. twisters when going from place to place. that way, we have a lure/hook in the water at all times. Also, ask outfitters now, get ideas.

And when all else fails, bring extra deep diving rapalas...paddle along an unknown deep lake area rumored to have sunken reefs, get a snag, try to undo the snag, failing that snap the line, note where you are, tie on another diver, then cast around and hold on...for those who don't have/use a depth finder...like me...it works...

The Mn DNR has a site called lake finder punch it up it has alot of info on lakes. The only drawback is the BW lakes are pretty remote and alot of them are not listed. It's a great way to check out the lake and find humps and holes.
