first time landing a lake trout! However, I'll be there in August, so might be tough to land one, but I'll give it a shot.

Okay, so not knowing I would be planning a trip to BWCA in 2011, I bought myself a two piece 6'6" St.Croix Triumph, and a Pflueger President that I loaded with 6'lb test recently. My intentions were a light weight spin set up for brookies and browns in summer. Well now I'm going to BWCA and it seems like my new set up is to small for BWCA. It's the only freshwater set up I have. I do have a couple of fly rods, but if I'm fishing in August, and from what I've read, I'll need to get a spoon down 30' - 50', a fly rod is not ideal for BWCA.

So I was wondering; IS my set up to small? Do most people travel with a four piece rod or two piece? What about a tackle box (mine is kind of bulky and big)? Boy.... I'd hate to have to by a new rod and reel!!!:)

August can be the best of times, and the worst of times for lakers. If it is calm and you find them, you can sit right on top of them and jig. Your rod and reel is fine. I'm assuming that your reel came with an extra spool, put some 8 or 10 pd mono on that extra spool.

yeah, you'll be fine. just do what walleye_hunter suggested, bring a heavier line on a diff spool in case you get into some big'uns. It's rare to get anything over 4 lbs if you fish like me, lol if you do on the 6, then have fun!
or switch over to a braided wire. I prefer the 6-30 spiderwire, but i'm lookin' at their new mono's now. they appear to be more 'appealing' to the fish, i have a buddy who claims that braided = bad and that mono = good. now that mono's catching up, i'll give it a shot this year when i reline my spools!

I don't target lakers so from that aspect I can't offer you much help. But I agree 100% with what walleye hunter said. Your equipment is fine. Try some 8 Lb Trilene XL or XT. That time of year you can have a lot of fun with smallies and catch some walleyes as well. Good Luck.

Good advice. It did come with an extra spool. So I'll load that up with some 8lb. I guess I'll have to stock up on some bucktail jigs this winter. I was just reading about these blakemore redhook raodrunner jigs, so it'd be fun to give those a shot too. I really don't do any fishing with jigs.

Well, I'm sure the girlfriend will be glad I'm not buying new fishing gear :( but I did notice a scratch in my tackle box....

I would take 2dozen, 1/4-1/8 oz. plain jig heads and 4 dozen, 3in. white curly tailed grubs over bucktails. Bring along 3-4 rebel pop-r top water baits, 3-4 rebel craws, several dozen 4-5in. purple rubber worms with worm hooks and 1/16-1/8 oz tunnel sinkers. Be sure to bring your fly rod, and the largest poppers you can cast comfortably, and some clouser minnows. Store it in a one sided plano box. August fishing can be very good you may need to fish at night so bring a light, also look for moving water, areas where one lake flows into another, also fish around submerged reefs. Good luck.

Awesome! Thanks Miami! Key info. Just curious; is there any fishing to be had on the streams and river ways?

Absolutely! You should always try below any rapids. Many times we have backtracked along one of the portages we took on the way into our destination just to fish some of the various rapids along the way. We have had great success for Walleyes and Smallies using leeches and a slip bobber. Just set the depth at about 2-3 feet and let it drift. You get a bite on just about every cast.
