Hi, first time post to this forum. Wondering if anyone has been into Caribou lake (the one near Clearwater up the gunflint)in the winter and targeted whitefish or caught any while targeting others. Thinking of making a trip before trout opener to test some new gear and would appreciate anyone's experience/advice...
Thanks!!!

If your on a lake that has whitefish, in the summer they are super easy to catch if you can find them, they are usually suspended over deep water, and if you drop down a small crappie jig, even a small ice fishing jig tiped with a waxworm, you will catch whitefish. In the winter they can be deep or shallow, just got to find them. A good depthfinder is key when fishing suspended whities. They are great smoked, I dont like eating them any other way however. p.s. When theyre really active, try a jigging rapala, its heavier and gets deep quickly .

The biggest whitefish I have ever seen came out of Caribou, close to 10lbs.

Thanks for the replies! They are great smoked and also breaded and pan fried. Any info on the portage in the winter? Get used much?
