Has anyone done much fishing in Jasper and Ogish ? If so , is it mostly walleye and smallies ? I know the fire was there last summer and caused a lot of damage but I hope to get down that way this year. How long would it take to get from Alpine into Ogish ? I have fished the falls coming into Alpine from Jasper so I know where that portage is. About 16 years ago we went into Jasper on an extremely windy day and I caught one small walleye speed drifting with the wind. Other than that I have not fished it much. Appreciate the help.
Jasper is a strange lake... it's extremely deep for it's size. The deepest i've ever seen is over 110 feet.
It didn't really have a bass population until the 90s, and it's full of whitefish.
Nowadays you can find bass pretty easy, and the occasional walleye. You can also find whitefish by jigging smaller jigs on deep reefs, if you can find one. Drop offs work well too. A bit of worm or minnow should be on the jig.
There are also some lake trout.
Ogish has it all, and it's a pretty good walleye lake, but most of them are pretty small. Lots of bass and the occasional big northern.
Jasper really got burned, and I know they lost at least one campsite. But that lake needed it, it was had some pretty bad blowdown.
Ogish burned too.
The little lake in between Ogish and Jasper, Kingfisher, has some bass and walleyes in it, and even the occasional lake trout. Well worth fishing, because no one ever fishes it. They just plow through.
You could get from Alpine to Ogish in less than 2 hours. The portage from Alpine to Jasper is piece of cake. As are the ones from Jasper to Kingisher and Kingfisher to Ogish. More so since the fire... Cleaned them up a little.
