Hey all-

I'm a first timer planning a trip to the BWCA and was wondering what lake/river would make a good trip. This is primarily going to be a fishing trip and I want to go somewhere that can offer decent fishing for walleye, smallmouth, trout and pike probably in that order.

Thanks for the help

BEN

How many days? What time of year?

Hey Ben
Disappointment has some good walleye and smally fishing (and some largemouth too, I think). I didnt catch too many pike there the weekend i was there, but I'm sure there are some big ones. As for trout, if you wanted to paddle a little further, there are some good lake trout lakes a day's paddle or so away. I know kekekabic has some good lakers, someone else will probably know a few more lakes. Ahsub is just a portage away from disappointment and has brook trout in it (or so I've heard.)

I'll probably be there for 3-5 days in June. Also, I'm more interested in stream trout than lake trout. And big pike sound fun too...like I said I want the "do it all lake," even though it probably doesn't exist:) One more question, is the fishing generally better in lakes than rivers or is it about a horse a piece?

If you went to the north end of Disappointment you are only a portage away from Ashub. Ashub is a designated Trout lake. Not sure what kind but it is stocked with trout other than lakers.

The correct spelling is Ahsub and it is stocked with Brook Trout.

another lake that i know of with somewhat large brookies is Neglige Lake. But good luck getting into it. It is in the Knife lake area and Knife lake would be a good do it all option for ya!

Moose River, EP16 north to Lac La Croix. There is abundant fishing options on many of the lakes and rivers on that route. I caught smallmouth, northern pike, walleye but did not fish for lake trout.

I have done better in lakes that rivers in all but one trip. I agree going out Moose River North is a good option with with different types of fishing that is not very difficult. I have not fished for trout other than lakers so I can't really help you there. Disappointment does seem like a good choice because it's not that far. Agnes is nice but will be crowded. Oyster (has lakers) is a nice lake that's not that far with other lakes you can get too.
