IMO Ramshead is not worth making the effort to portage into. It's a shallow Lake without much fish production.

I purchase VNO's last two dozen leeches before my trip last year, and we went in Sept. 4th or so. Live leeches are tough to come by in September.

I knew that, just have heard of 20lb pike in there(Ramshead)! Would the lakes be turning over by mid Sept?

We had a great time on Ramshead and were only there a day. The day included a 36" and a 40" northern plus 5 others over 30". We spent the rest of the week on Agnes and were disappointed by the fishing there, and on Lac La Croix. Just my two cents. Maybe Mort isn't a northern fan. When I go back next year, we're definitely spending 2 days on Ramshead instead of the one.

Thanks beanman! Were you up there recently? Methods used would be helpful also!

We were there first week of June. Water was cold and we fished slow with spoons, bucktails and big X-raps. Not sure if I can provide any advice for this time of year... I would give the SW bay a shot to see what's happening there, but we seemed to hit the bigger ones on rocky points. Lots of big boulders for cover. Red/White and Yellow 5 of Diamonds or Gold were the hot colors then. Hope that helps.

Sure does! So you were mostly just surface fishing around shallow water then? Sounds like it worked regardless and thats all that matters, did you eat well then lol???

We actually threw all of them back except for a couple smaller ones for lunch. So hopefully they are still there ready to be caught.

I would have released them as well! We do have some big eaters on this trip so the 1 over 30in rule may be exploited! Certainly no 40in fish though, thats to good a fish in my eyes!

I just got back from Agnes. I marked a few fishing spots on the bwca.com map.

For September, I would try to fishing spot on the bwca.com map.
- The deep water structure by three point sites
- The water around the rocks just outside the bay
- The moving water below the falls on the 25 rod portage to the boulder river

In fact, I'd try all the moving water on the north end of the lake.

Going to Agnes in October. Any concerns about the rivers being shallow on the way in?

Just got back from 16 on Sunday, water levels were higher than they were 2 years ago. There are a couple of beaver dams that you'll have to lift over, but we never were dragging on the bottom.

As for fishing, walleye bite was great until a storm one night and then they shut off. Fished the same spot, the same time of day, the same bait, the same depth, and where I caught 10 fish one day I didn't get a bite the next.

We got SKUNKED in fish stake narrows, minus a couple decent pike. No eyes, no smallies. I could hardly believe it.

Also just got back from 16 on sunday! We had great weather, maybe a bit windy but nice! Fishing was great i thought, jig and a twister combo caught 'eyes and crappies. Crapies were a huge surprise and we had some good ones! Rivers were navigable with a decent load and you will need to jump a few beaver dams until this spring when the high water washes them out:)

Anyone remember seeing the day use permits and after sept 30 permits on site at 16? Just would rather skip the stop.

Also came out on Sunday from 16. What an awesome 5 day trip for weather! The river was a bit low in some spots...could only get the paddle about 8" into the water.

I'll post a link to a trip report I made up.
