After looking around I have found that there are only a few openings, and none of which I have any experience with.

The guys I am with want to fish lakers. I don't mind lakers, but being able to catch walleyes would be nice too.

has anyone ever fished trout lake, as that is one of the options.

if someone was realy bored they could look here

http://www.recreation.gov/permits/map_of_01_Trout_Lake_Op_Om/r/wildernessAreaMap.do?page=map&topTabIndex=Permits&map=entrancesStations&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=72600&entranceId=277717

and give me a hand! I am going nuts being the only one who is planning the trip!

I purchased a permit for Missing Link lake #50 for that date, just a few weeks ago. At that time there were several permits left, but it is a holiday weekend so they could be gone.

Many lakes in this area off the Gunflint, offer some great Lake Trout fishing.

I have fished it a few times in the past. It was never a numbers lake for lake trout as far as I know--I think it tended to have fewer big fish. It used to be a good walleye lake.

I know that trout lake experienced a population crash of lake trout about 10 years ago. I think it was some disease. From the DNR website, it sounds like it is recovering.

It is a motor lake, and you will be guaranteed to be amongst motor boats. Also, it is a very long paddle across Vermillion, so if you do go, you might want to look into a tow. Most of my trips into that area have been into lakes one portage off of Trout. Pine lake used to be a good walleye lake, as was Oriniack and Little Trout. Not sure how they have been in recent years.
