In an attempt to give my wife at least a taste of BWCA paddling we're pulling the pop-up to Fall Lake campground over the 4th of July. I'd also love for her to catch some decent size fish.

What can we expect from Fall Lake?

TIA

Decent walleye fishing, with plenty of people and motorboats.

I had great fishing on my trip to Fall Lake in august last year. I took my mom there with my 16 foot Lund and a 15 horse. We stayed in the campground and got day permits for the BWCA every day. We caught slab bluegills, many small pike, small walleye, and lots of bass. Best spot for northerns is the weedy bay to the north of the campground. Fish the current between Fall and Newton for smallies. Nearly every spot I fished, I caught gills up to and over 9 inches. Although the best spot was on the NW side of Mile Island. My mom enjoyed it since she was able to have a shower and bathroom and the fishing wasn't bad either.

Wow, I didn't know Fall was so good for bluegills. Those are nice!

If you're staying at Fall Lake, you also can always take day trips to some of the close EP lakes and do some paddling/fishing...Wood, Lake One,...Ojibway (I'm not sure about the access). Fall Lake seems like a nice lake too. Sure, you'll encounter some motorboat traffic but it should be more than bearable and it's nothing like, say, a Minocqua. I doubt you'll encounter any "Redneck Yacht Clubs"! :)

We were there 2 years ago on Labor Day Weekend. Great place to camp, boat noise wasn't to much and easy access to the BW and Ely for day trips.

Another quickie daytrip is west from the Lake One EP. One short and easy portage puts you in to Confusion Lake. Fish the current coming into the lake as well as out of it. Good smallies and a few walleye thrown in. Another half hour paddle or so and one more portage puts you into two more good fishing spots.

Hey...thanks for all the info!
Yupper...I already have a reservation for July 2-6.
Our neighbors got the site next to ours and two more friends will tent it in our site.

Fall Lake is a very nice campground- clean, neat with new bathroom/showers. We have stayed there often the night before heading in to the bdub. Will be full when you will be there I would imagine.

Nice campground. The only thing I did not like was you need to be a early riser. Seems like the groups getting a early start into the BW can be a little noisy packing up to go.

What can we expect from Fall Lake?

fall lake in july...on the fourth...really depends on the weather...and your paddling....you should check the two bait shops when your in town...one on each end......ask them about live bait or artificals...what depth you can cover w/the canoe..what time of day you'll be out fishing...

fall lake is a dark water piece of water...dark water..dark bait...for casting ...

one other point...if you have a canoe....you can drive to many fine lakes...away from the motorboat crowd of fall lake...and fish some quieter canoe water.......again just ask at eithe bait shop...you just day trip from the campground...good luck........tw
