Tonight's camp - (this one is tough to describe) just east oh the huge island in Lake of the Woods about 40% of the way north on the lake.
It appears that winds are near 20 mph so they are seeking the most protected route north.

Me, too.
I thought maybe my computer could not read the blog pages, but I see I am not alone.

Tonight's Camp - well it appears that they took a layover day. Perhaps they are wind bound or forgot to turn on their InReach. Lake of the Woods is a huge lake but not as big and windy as Lake Winnepeg that lake is very shallow and gets easily riled up.

I had the pleasure of meeting these ladies last weekend on the Rainey River. Quite a journey they are on. I would encourage anyone on here to read about Wilderness Canoe Base and their support of it through this paddle. I don't think this post really mentioned they are looking for donations for Wilderness Canoe Base. Here is a link if you can donate please do.

6/21/16- Camped just about 2 miles west of White Dog.
They are averaging 13.33 miles per day. Can they make it to the Bay before ice-up at that pace? I think they are going to have to start putting in some heavy mileage days.

quote jcavenagh: "6/21/16- Camped just about 2 miles west of White Dog.my thoughts exactly. 13 miles a day on the easy leg of their trip isn't impressive. i would have planned at least 20 miles a day on those big, mostly protected lakes on the border. lake winnipeg will be the test, i've been on winnipeg, it is shallow and has big choppy waves that make superior seem tame.

Well, it seems they had a 25 mi day and now look to be going for 35-40 miles today. Lake Winnipeg tomorrow?
Their route looks to hug the east shore. The worst of the waves will be there. I hope they make it through that.

(I was AFK for a week)
Looks like they are starting out their fourth leg of the trip. Yet to reach the big water on Lake Winnepeg.

For those who are following this, I highly recommend reading Canoeing with the Cree by Eric Severied. He and a buddy went from Minneapolis to Hudson's bay in the 1930's in one long trip. A great read.

Every paddling crew I have followed that has paddled Lake Winnipeg hugs the East Shore. I don't know why. I would have assumed the western shore would be more protected. Does anyone have any idea about why everyone paddles on the Eastern side?
I can think of two people I could ask actually that have done it but wonder if anyone here knows.

There is a case to rise early or travel at night if possible to avoid winds? Not being familiar with a area might hinder that idea?

Looks like they finished their journey.
Being away from home on trips myself I sort of lost track of following their progress.
Still waiting to read a blog of their journey.
They never did post anything on their website.
journey for renewal
