Went to the expo tonight (which was awesome) and going back tomorrow for seminars [all day]. Anyone else planning on going to any of the seminars tomorrow?

I'll be there for my Alaska fishing & travel seminars. I plan to sit in a couple of others. I look forward to seeing you there. If Alaska is on your bucket list, don't miss out.

I saw the Alaskan booth tonight - but didn't know if any of the folks there were you...

I actually used to live in Valdez Alaska, but don't plan on any AK trips anytime soon.

Hope to go to the "canoe round table" on Sunday. Should be interesting seeing all those opinionated guys together. Might stop in Saturday for a while.

Valdez and Prince William Sound is a truly jaw dropping place. You were fortunate to live there. No, I was not there tonight. I'm coming up tomorrow.

Headed up in about 5 hours. Hope to look at the forsale canoes, not buying just looking. Want to go to several seminars includeing the roundtable one, want to hear Kevin Callan, these are just a few I want to watch, camp somewhere saturday night then back on sunday. I noticed that this year about the same number of seminars but few repeats, last year was nice because if you missed someone you could catch them later or the next day. Looking to buy a good mapcase, a compass, some elastic cord and some cordlocks. If you see an older gent with a greybeard and an olive green Tiley stop and say Hi. FRED

I plan to go to the discussion tomorrow [Sunday] as well with Marshall, Callan, Jacobson, Kesserling, and O'Hara. I will probably be the shortest woman in the room! ;-) Absolutely LOVE Callan! I've watched several of his videos in preparation. He is awesome IMO.

Yes I will say hi! I saw Old Salt today!

Were you by chance in the seminar on the 221 day solo trip today?

I was there most of the day....seemed like every seminar I went to was absolutely packed. I never know which one to go to, and if I'm not 100% happy about the one I *did* watch, I regret that I didn't go to another one. :)

I would also be attending the panel tomorrow, but I'm going to be too busy paddling to go listen to people talk about it.

Does anyone ever record the session(s) and then post it/them online? Seems like that would be kind of neat, but I can't remember seeing any video equipment in the ones I've attended, so I'm guessing not.

Going to check out Dan's Tarp Rigging at 11:45 and then listen to Amy and Dave Freeman at 2:15 talk about their paddle to DC.

I agree - if you didn't get there the second the door opened, it was hard finding a seat! So many great speakers!

I went to:
Wilderness Canoe Tripping at the Highest Level with Stu Osthoff
Who gave me great fishing tips afterwards!
Tips from a Thousand Trips - with Rob Kesserling (which was exact opposite of Stu - which
was hilarious!
Self-Reliance Skills in Emergency Situations
Canoeing the Boundary Waters in Style with Cliff Jacobson

And the start of the 221 day solo by Gary Fiedler.

We need a new thread about the contradictions we heard in the seminars. It was hilarious indeed. Stu said you just need to plan on and deal with wet feet. Cliff says constantly wet feet are terrible and you need rubber boots or goretex socks...Stu says double or even tripple portage to haul all you need. Rob says go minimalist and single portage. And many many more examples from the seminars. Someone who didn't have any experience could come away totally confused.

And that is why it is so important to understand that it is all just opinion.
Unless you are talking about a life threatening topic, everything remains a personal choice.
Suggesting a single portage to a newbie, is also suggesting they dump a boatload of $ on gear.... Or they just don't bring anything.

I've been fortunate enough to have been on this website near daily since last September or so - inhaling the information that everyone gives to me - so I did recognize it as opinion. Even Rob & Cliff disagreed - and they're pretty close on the aisle on most things.

I would say I have a pretty good hybrid approach to Stu/Rob & Cliff's methods.

What I really appreciated about the programing was the endorsement and affirmation that I am camping in a responsible, educated manner, and I even learned a few tricks. Yup, lots of opines to be heard...some of them I share as well.

I wish I could say that each program was better than the previous one or that I had the stuff to leave in the middle of something that wasn't worth my time. Maybe next year I'll do a better job of reading the descriptions. And I'll bring a lunch too.

IMO, this lineup of speakers was one of the best ever.
