From www.ely.org:

Ely Chamber of Commerce

Keep Ely in Minnesota!
Could Canadian deal to buy Ely be final by early 2009?
April 1, 2008 — Today it was announced that Canada has made an unprecedented offer, as a boost to tourism, to purchase the famous Boundary Waters town of Ely, Minn., and relocate it north of the U.S./Canadian border.

In a prepared statement, the Premier of Ontario pledged Ely will retain its worldwide reputation as the entryway to the Boundary Waters, though now from the other side, as well as its legendary lakes, resorts, restaurants, gift shops and museums, including the world-famous International Wolf Center.

Reportedly, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has entered into negotiations with the Minnesota DNR and the Governor’s office to arrive at a satisfactory price. Sources close to the deal say that Ely will become Ely, Ontario as early as 2009.

Minnesota residents are left wondering if this might be the last summer to enjoy the one million acres of unspoiled wilderness Ely is known for worldwide.

Sorry. I looked for another thread but I guess I didn't look hard enough.

It was just a coincidence for me. I happened to be going to the Ely site to look for lodging. The sale to Canada cuaght me off guard. I wonder if I can still pay with American $s...

I can't wait to be part of Kanada; free high quality health care, no dangerous handguns to scare me and very light sentencing when I happen to break the law... I'm trembling!!

That has got to be a total crock of you-know-what! Name anywhere else in the continental U.S. that has been sold to a foreign power. Let alone the concept of private property rights this country is famous for! Would every citizen in Ely agree to sell their property to Canada? And if the Bush administration is behind this, then it may be time to show why gun rights are so important to this country. Besides, when did the Minnesota DNR gain selling rights to national forest land.

This has got to be somebody's or some organization's idea of publicity stunt!

Dang! This post got me really fired up! Oh crap! The wife just reminded me it's April Fool's day. Now I know for sure when I look in the mirror what I'm seeing. :(

Hmm could this possibly have anything to do with April Fools Day? Well, we may just have to move to Ely to reap the benefits!

I knew this would happen! Once those Canadians' dollar went above the the US dollar, I knew they wouldn't stop at great bargains at the Mall of America. Ely! What next, International Falls, Frostbite Falls?

If Canada buys International Falls does that mean they will buy the house we have for sale there? Great! Of course once that North American Union thing kicks in Canada will be paying for it in Ameros.

Will those who are residing in Ely get a break when they buy bait in Ely (now in Canada)?

No, actually the price of Canadian bait is way higher, and the count has to be 12, 13 if I get distracted:)
