One of my goals for a future trip is to be able to go when the Perseid meteor shower is passing through. Was anyone there this year or in recent years that can speak to the experience? Is there anywhere in particular that is more suited for viewing? I read that Angleworm lake has a great shoreline for this event. Any other input I can use for planning a trip for that purpose?

It has been a regular short trip for my wife & I to find a permit last minute and paddle in to see them.. The last couple years we've gotten up in the middle of the night, poured A cup of wine and enjoyed the show...This year there was a bright moon during the peak not much to see except a really beautiful stretch of weather:)

As drippingmoose stated, you want to be sure that the Perseid Peak dates don't correspond to a bright moon. In addition, the peak time of night for viewing is after midnight, because the earth has rotated so you are looking in the direction it is travelling.

They are called the Perseid shower because the area of the sky where they will be more pronounced is in the constellation of Perseus, which will be in the north east portion of the night sky.

If you can find a campsite with a rocky point free of trees that gives you a nice view to the north east, on a moon less night, you'll be all set.

The Perseid meteor shower always occurs around the middle of August and you will probably see some meteors several days before and after the night of the "peak."

One night several years ago I was teaching constellations under the night sky to a group of kids at a girl scout camp. It was in the middle of the Perseid meteor shower and I told the girls that I had arranged for them to see some "shooting stars."

A few minutes later we see a really great meteor that shot across the sky from horizon to horizon. The girls were all oohing and ahhing and I told them that I had arranged for another one to come by. Not ten minutes later a bright "fire ball" shot across the sky. Those little girls thought I was something special. It's one of my fondest memories.
