The town of Scandia, MN is proposing "improvements" to the Log House Landing that will destroy the character of that area and likely turn it into another Osceola type boat launch. Here's info:

The Scandia Log House Landing is our community's charming and secluded access to the St. Croix River. Click on the link above to help preserve this beautiful wooded and historic landing by signing this petition!

Please have each adult member of your household sign the petition. Use your local address if you have two locations. Please also forward this email to anyone who may be interested in protecting this beautiful and peaceful landing.

It is critical that the City of Scandia understand that there is strong support for an alternative plan that is more ecologically sensitive and appropriate for the rural character of the Log House Landing. We are seeking a reasonable solution that would meet the City’s and the community’s objectives.

For those of you unfamiliar with this issue, please click on the Twin Cities Pioneer Press article below.

As described in the article, the Log House Landing is a beautiful and historic rural road located along the quiet wooded banks of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. It is now in jeopardy of being altered irrevocably. The current plan is to double the width of the existing dirt road from approximately to 16’ to 34’ (at its widest,) pave the entire road and add curbs and gutters. This plan is out of character with the rustic setting and is counter to its intended use as an access for slow traffic delivering canoes, kayaks and small fishing boats.

A wide suburban-style dead-end access was not always in the plan to address the issues of erosion and water quality. Less costly alternatives with environmentally sensitive designs were proposed by the Watershed District. However, in order to qualify for the grant funds, the City was required to comply with road standards that were designed for parks with heavy recreational traffic. These added road standards doubled the size of the road and nearly doubled the projected cost to the taxpayers.

The impact of this plan to our small rural road and nationally protected landing should not be underestimated. It will forever change the scenic and rustic setting of this important historical site.

More details about our concerns and our efforts can be found in the petition itself.
