My oldest boy lost his first tooth at home and his second tooth in Ely. He got $10.00 for his first tooth and $2.00 for his second tooth.
I wasn't that I was cheap, I assure you :). I thought that the event presented a fine opportunity to explain the difference in markets and labor rates. He nodded, somewhat skepticly, and kept the two bucks.

Nice. Good idea, I like it.

What's the problem with that? By the birth date on your profile of 11-1-1900 those dimes went just as far then as $10 now. :)

Two years ago, I decided for the first time to leave my wallet buried in my bag in my car parked next to the Lodge at Rockwood. I took a tooth inventory before leaving and all seemed pretty solid. Sure enough, first day out, my youngest lost a tooth. The tooth fairy left a lovely note, saying she happened to be flying through the BWCA and saw the note my daughter had left for her, but that the tooth fairy left her money back in fairyland. She assured my daughter in the note that she would catch up with her in a few days, and sure enough, the tooth fairy made a visit in Duluth! My daughter was so excited! Haven't left my wallet back in the car since!

Was my old man a cheapskate? Has our home’s tooth fairy been a spendthrift?
I used to love Reese’s peanut butter cups. I got them at Skog’s dime store on the way home from school. There were tons of kids in there after school so you had to wait your turn to carefully choose your candy from the huge oak shelf with glass partitions. The candy was stacked perfectly. I still vividly remember Mr. Skog looking over his reading glasses and assuming all kids were guilty, until, … well, just forever assuming they were all guilty. All the terrified and salivating kids got the Skog stink eye and that slowed down the process even more.
I learned that I could avoid some of Mr. Skog’s attention by getting in front of poorly dressed Darren Closner. He was a nice enough kid but his dad was a drunk and that brought Darren and his brothers a lot more attention from old man Skog. A kid has gotta do what a kid has gotta do.
I began kindergarten in 1969. The single cup package was a nickel and the luxurious double cup combo was a dime. At that time, I got fifty cents for my first tooth and two bits for subsequent teeth.
With the fifty cent first tooth bounty I could get 10 delicious peanut butter cups. I could get 5 cups with the payout for later teeth.
Today the single cup is no longer available and the average cost of the two cup package is $1.14. My son’s first tooth could have netted 17.54 cups. For later teeth, he could get 3.508 cups (Mr. Skog would NOT like these fractions).
We have 20 baby teeth. At my childhood rate the total lost tooth compensation would have purchased 105 cups. My son could trade his baby teeth for just 84 cups.
However you may feel about this, blame it either on my wife or Obama.

I still remember the tooth fairy leaving $.25 for me at Gooseberry Falls State Park when I was a kid. I'll bet that your daughter remembers it (her tooth fairy visit) too.

Wow, we never even would have thought about that, and my kids are tooth-losing age. But, that might have something to do that we don't actually do the tooth fairy (or Santa or the Bunny). They've always known that it's mom and dad. That's the way my wife wanted it, and it's the biggest thing I've had to defer in our marriage ;)
