In Bojibob's "holy smoke challenge you were caught in a fire and asked what you would do? This was the same year of the Pagami Creek fire. There was many pictures videos and articles on the fire. Many people posted from here on there experiences. My question is, using Bojibob's same challenge, if asked again what you would do, would your answer be different?

Rob Johnson, you mentioned you would like to know what a Wildland Firefighter would recommend.

Ok this is what I would do in that situation. When you arrived and unloaded you could smell smoke but couldn't see any. That old saying where there's smoke there's fire. That's true. Smelling smoke is usually no big deal. However when you pull your map out to see if there are any campgrounds up wind from you and there isn't, that changes things. Now you have to assume that smoke is coming from a possible lightning strike. Red flag #1.

While looking at the map you see that the strong wind is blowing the same direction you are going. Blowing that hard in the early morning usually means something is going on weather wise. Red flag #2.

On the map you see you will be portaging over 2 miles before you get to any sizable lake that has a good chance to provide refuge. Red flag #3.

I'm sure you've seen the aftermath of a wind driven fire (Pagami Creek). In my opinion there isn't any other place but the lake at the end of the portage that you would have any chance of survival.

So, there are too many red flags for me. I'm getting back in the van if its still there or heading back down the road out of the area. I still have time to find another entry point and hopefully enjoy the rest of my trip, smoke free.

Hope this helps.

quote MHS67: "OBX2Kayak, thanks for the link, not sure how to do that."

If I knew how to explain it, I'd probably be teaching tech stuff instead of spending time on this site.

Here's an attempt:
1) At the bottom of your message, you will see the phrase "Add a link to this message." Click on it.

2) In the box after "Link:" type in your destination address. (Usually something like "http://www.blah.com/index.blahblah.etc")**

3) In the box after "Name:" type in the name you want to users to see.

4) Click "Add link" and you are done.

** Instead of typing the address, I usually go to the destination site and copy the address into my browser.

Hope this doesn't confuse you too much.

I light of the article Minnesotian brought up this might be of interest to some of you.
