Studies are ongoing as to the effect eruptions outside the mid latitudes--- ie Iceland,Alaska etc. Tambora,Pinatubo etc. has been known for sometime to cause cool summer etc,,, but evidence is starting to mount that eruptions closer to the poles may play a stronger role in reducing the incoming solar radiation. Very interesting topic.

quote sunnybear09: "The world is truly a fragile place, in human terms."
Reminds me of one of my favorite Muir quotes:
“The world, we are told, was made especially for man — a presumption not supported by all the facts.”
- John Muir (1838-1914)

Another interesting connection is the relationship between earthquakes and lava flows. It is not uncommon for an earthquake in South America to interrupt the lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii.

This is very interesting stuff. Thanks all for posting.
I remember something about the volcanic island of Krakatoa erupting and actually exploding, and the ash causing another "year without a summer" in the northern plains of the U.S. About 1887?
