I am looking for some companies that you can recommend make good dehydrated meals. I know of Mountain House, Backpackers Pantry, etc. At Caneoacopia I tried Cache Lake and really liked it.

So my questions is, are there any other companies similar to Cache Lake that you could recommend for meals?

Thanks!

We have tried them all. And ended up buying a dehydrator a couple dehydrator cookbooks and made our own. you get bigger portions, a better varity, at half the cost. It just takes a little extra time and planning

I'll add Enertia, Mary Jane's Farm, PackItGourmet. Each makes things I like, but also things I'm not that crazy about.

+1 Will save you money over time, and you will actually enjoy the meals.

I never buy the pre-packaged dehydrated meals anymore. They don't taste very good and are expensive. I simply plan my meals and buy everything I need at the grocery store. I buy pre-cooked bacon, (a great invention for camping) and dehydrate my own ground beef which tastes great. The rest, I buy at the grocery store.

It takes a little more work and planning than opening a Campmore catalogue and ordering all of your food, but it's definately worth it in my opinion.

Take some time to walk your grocery store isles and really look at everything they offer. Chances are the light bulb will appear over your head and you'll see all sorts of possibilities that you never would have dreamed of. Be creative in your meals...that's part of the fun.

Ditto on the grocery store. One of our favorite and very light weight is Stove Top Stuffing or Pepperidge Farms. I think the former one only needs to add water. Together with instant Mashed Potatos, Idahoan prepacked in 4 person servings, and some gravy packets. It's like the best tasting stuff out in the woods!

You can find a lot of dehydrated products at the grocery store and repack for camping. Kraft mac and cheese always goes with us, instant spuds and gravy, powdered milk, Lipton soups, and so on.

We usually will take hamburger and cook it ahead of time and then vaccum pack it. Can even spice it for different meals ahead of time. Then just add to what ever, like mac and cheese.

Good stuff

I do a combination of several things. I dehydrate some of my own stuff, I pick and choose things at the grocery store, and I buy some commercial back packer's meals.

I just returned from a weeks trip where we experimented with a few commercially available back packer's meals. A couple of Backpacker's Pantry meals bordered on being outstanding. I was very impressed. Black Bean Tamale Pie and Cajun Chicken with Rice. I really enjoyed these meals, they were very flavorable and large enough servings for two.

+1....and don't forget foil pack tuna and chicken, pepperoni sticks, hard sausages, tortillas or pita bread, dried fruit, and a myriad of "add only water" rice and noodle dishes to which you can add meat or fish. Usually the only prepackaged food I bring is dehydrated veggies.

Don't forget...you can get tuna and chicken in those foil pouches now, too. Very tasty.
MOGirl put up a recipe for Stove Top Chicken Bowl that we had last summer. Hot, filling, and tasty!
Of course, mac'n'cheese, oat meal, cup-o-soup, ramens, instant mashed taters, instant pancake mix, cornbread mix are all traditional favorites with my crowd.

My wife bought me a dehydrator a couple years ago. It's great, but get an early start. It's time consuming.

I buy the Knorr's brand noodle and rice dish packages in the grocery store. Then I add mushrooms, peppers and onions from the dehydrator. Throw in a little cheese. It makes a pretty good meal.

I also dry a bunch of fruit, especially apples with cinnamon.

Remember the Liptons Sides Plus? They were wonderful. They are gone. I guess the Knorr transition did them in.

Sometimes I get sick of pasta and like rice dishes. The center aisles are not always a no no to canoe trippers.

You can find these

I think they could use more veggies so enter the food chopper and dehydrator. I am thinking carrot, onion and broccoli.

One of my favorite things to do is take the Knorrs Terryicki Rice or Terryiaki Noodles and Add the following:

Deydrated Chicken or Chicken in the foil pouch.
Deydrated broccoli
Dehydrated RED and Green Bell Peppers
I also add a bit of extra terryaki (dry powder) to the mix, because I am adding all the stuff above.

It really makes for a great MEAL instead of a side.

My Dad would call this "doctoring it up"

Like many of the other veterans on the site, I prefer to make my own meals. To me, that is part of the fun of the trip. I always do all of the breakfasts, and lunches. Then we all take turns at the evening meals.
Some of the crew are of the easy as it gets group, but the rest try to make a lasting impression on the rest of the team.

The recipe posts on this board have endless ideas that can be tweeked to meet anyones tastes.
