I know there is many people here that are wood workers and have made paddles. I made this paddle three years ago and used no power tools. Just planes, drawknives, spokeshaves, hand saws, rasps, sandpaper. It took me about a month to make. I like it and it fits me just right. Last year I was paddling up the small set of rapids in June between Ensign and Splash. As I pushed off rocks propelling us upstream I did the unthinkable. I wedged it and I heard a snap. I looked and did not see anything but In the sunlight the next day I could see the crack. It is near the centerline of the paddle, I highlighted the crack with a pencil line. The crack is about five inches long. There is no fiberglass on the paddle now. Here is my question, how do I fix it? I was thinking about two ways, 1) open the crack with a sliver of wood and inject some kind of glue, then fiberglass over it, 2) cut open the crack with a coping saw and then fill in the saw cut and fiberglass over it. The crack is very small and hard to see, not the center dark glue line. Please help me with your woodworking knowledge, thanks.

Came across this awhile back. Paddle Making

Have a paddle myself that is developing a crack on the end and have been thinking about using the epoxy tip portion from this web site. May use some fiberglass first and then finish off the tip with the epoxy.

coping saw is an interesting angle. it would assure a good bond front to back.

Thanks Kevin, that's the web page that I used to make my rockgaurd.
Thanks Kanoes, sounds like I will cut out the crack and fill with epoxy, sand down on both sides, install a new rock gaurd, put a piece of fiberglass on to strengthen the paddle.
