Things are starting to look up. My group is heading in Sunday and heading out June 2nd. Anyone heard any rumors about the ban in the BWCA being lifted soon??

INCIDENT UPDATED: 2007-05-19 16:04:45 ET
Incident: Ham Lake
Released: 2007-05-23 15:23:00 ET

Beginning 8:00 am on Thursday, May 24, the Superior National Forest will lift the prohibition on campfires and charcoal in developed fee campgrounds on the Forest. This change in restriction applies onlyto the following campgrounds and any fires must be inside constructed steel fire grates provided by the Forest Service:

Devil Track Lake

East Bearskin Lake

Flour Lake

Iron Lake

Kimball Lake

Trail's End

Two Island Lake

Birch Lake

Fall Lake

Fenske Lake

S. Kawishiwi River

Echo Lake

Lake Jeanette

Cadotte Lake

Pfeiffer Lake

Whiteface Reservoir

Crescent Lake

Divide Lake

Little Isabella River

McDougal Lake

Ninemile Lake

Sawbill Lake

Temperance River

This change, made in consultation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, is based on recent and projected precipitation and cooler temperatures as well as the ongoing "green-up" in the north woods. Rainfall ranged from ½ to ¾ of an inch across the Forest on Monday and Tuesday, with short (rest of week) and long term forecasts (next 30 days)continuing to call for above normal precipitation. As well, fire danger has moderated over the rest of Minnesota, making resources more available. The prohibition on campfires remains in all other areas on the Superior National Forest, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Pressurized liquid gas stoves are allowed in the BWCAW as well as the rest of the Forest. Possessing, discharging, or using any kind of fireworks or other similar device continues to be prohibited.

Forest managers will continue to closely monitor fuel and weather
conditions. As conditions change, the restrictions will be re-assessed.

Forest wide prohibitions were originally put into effect earlier this month when fire risks were extreme.

It's a step in the right direction. Hopefully it's lifted soon. If it continues to rain up there I am sure that they will lift it within a week or so.

As of yesterday, the area was still 9" short of rain for the year.

being nine inches short is a long term issue, the short term issues of immediate fire danger should be taken into account I would think it has been greatkly lessened by greening up and consistant rain.
