Based on the recommendations here, I bought some Permethrin to treat some clothing. I got the Durathon brand to soak the clothes in and the instructions said not to use it on undergarments or hats.

Does anyone use this on socks, undershirts or hats? Also, is it OK to wear the treated garments on bare skin?

i do socks, pants, shirts and fleece tops. i did my headnet the last time too.

btw, where did you find the soak version in that brand?

Andy- I have treated socks because of ticks, but I wear them over liner socks. I have also treated my pants and LS shirt, which I have worn over t-shirt and briefs. BUT, I have only used the spray, not the soak. I have also sprayed boots/shoes and the outside of hats - I don't know, maybe not a good idea...?

I haven't used the brand your using nor soaked any clothes. Just sprayed them and let dry. I do use them on my wool socks, but I react to wool and always wear liner socks underneath. So I'm afraid I can't help you much. sorry.

I also sprayed my hat. not sure I was supposed to, but I did. Also sprayed my pants.

I use the Sawyer brand pump spray, they say that it treats four outfits. An outfit consists of a shirt, pants, socks. I also sprayed my socks. Why not spray your socks? Here is the link.. Sawyer

Jan.....Here's the LINK .

I'll probably soak pants, LS shirts, socks, bandanna and fleece tops. I got the soak type since it lasts 6 weeks and 6 washings seeming more cost effective.

Thanks for the advice.

The guy at gander mountain today told me when I bought some that it would last 70 washings. No, I did not believe him. ;-)

HUGE permethrin mistake by me. i forget who posted this but there are some different versions available at farm stores.....totally water based and versions with a petroleum base (to stick to the animals better i think).

i bought and treated before i saw that post. MY STUFF STILL STINKS!

i hand washed everything 6 times tonight and will be going to the laundromat tomorrow. i dont want to even risk washing them in our machine.

DO NOT buy the petroleum based ones!

live and learn.

I'm starting to get paranoid about using this. It's bad for you to get it on your skin when applying it, but it's okay once it's dried but it still kills bugs. Weird, but ok. But what happens when your treated clothes get wet later? Is that okay to touch? Should I use this for my kids? For myself I can handle the bugs but my main motivator is to keep the kids from having a bad trip...preferably without also giving them high doses of chemicals.

Ugh...

Good advice Jan. I used the suff I got for a set of clothes and no odor.

I used the Insectrin X from Fleet Farm which is petroleum based. Sprayed the clothes till moist and hung in screened porch for 4 days. They smelled bad for 2 days only and could not smell a trace of it during the trip.
It sure did work, zero ticks on me for an 8 day trip involving bushwacking walks through the woods.

We have used the petrolium based permethrin for years. Works fine. Just hang your clothes up and the smell goes away in a couple of days. We never notice it on the trip.

Please note that the health effects noted on the referenced site refer to the LIQUID permethrin. Once it has dried on your clothes it is quite safe, and getting the clothing wet will NOT reactivate any negative effects. The warning about young children is pure speculation, as no studies have been done.

I do socks, pants, hat, shirts, and also my fleece jacket. Bugs were not a problem on my last trip.

I'd take a bath in the stuff - if I could.
