Mr. Trix & I are heading up next Sunday the 12th of June. Staying at Rockwood Outfitters pretrip. Planning on dining at the Trail Center for dinner & a few beers that evening. Anybody else going to be in that vicinity that day? I will probably be wearing one of my BWCA shirts or hat. You are welcome to join us for a cocktail or two!

We will be coming out on the 18th & again will probably chow at the Trail Center before heading home.

I did not have any cell phone service (Verizon) further than 6 miles up the Trail at the George Washington Pines trailhead.
I bought a calling card in Grand Marais and used the payphone next to the road about 1 mile west from Trail Center on right to make calls back home. Maybe other cell phone providers work in that area but I don't think so.

I am going to be up the Gunflint on the 15th for a week at Devil's Track Lake. I will have 3 kids in tow however so cocktails are a no-go unless around my own campfire.

We are gonna be there but going in early Sunday. :-( I'll wave to ya though. :-)

I've got three groups putting in on the 12th. Saturday night we're staying at Iron Lake. On Sunday, one is putting in on the Magnetic River, another is putting in on Seagull, and my group is going in on Cross Bay. Seventeen total. We're all coming out on Friday. Doubt that we will see you but have a great trip. I'll have my BWCA.com cap on and maybe my T-shirt too.

Phones will not work more than a few miles up the Gunflint Trail just outside of Grand Marais.

My son and I are heading up from the Chicago area on Sunday...hope to be at the Gunflint Lake overlook by around midnight to catch a few z's before heading in to the Quetico in morning. Have a GREAT trip, fellow Packer lover:)

Yes, Nola, We are staying at Rockford's bunkhouse Sunday night & will be stopping there on our way out on the 18th. I posted on the trip planning forum about travel time from Long Island Lake to our exit at Cross Bay/ Ham Lake. From the responses, it will take us about 5 hours to get out from Long Island. Unless we decide to stay our last night closer to our entry point. That would probably put us at Rockford or the Trail Center about 1:00 - 2:00? I am an early morning riser but Mr. Trix not so much. However knowing there is a cold beer waiting for him somewhere, he will get up & get going!
Any idea about your time frame & where you will be camping last night?

We are heading into Cross Bay on Monday as well. Maybe we will see you on our route!

Great to hear Pete! We are planning on leaving the cities around 8:00 A.M. if all goes according to plan. We will most definately be at the Trail Center for dinner & drinks! From what Mocha said, it gets pretty busy on Sunday nights. I know we won't be up too late as I want to hit our entry point at the crack of dawn. I will look for you guys. Where are you staying pretrip?

Luft, I'm not sure if you know, but Trail Center isn't just a bar. It's a gift shop, restaurant, and has bar seating area. Completely appropriate for kids. Now the company you may be keeping there is a different story ;)

Trix - You have an AWESOME time....and every time you run across a challenging portage: Just grab that gear and hoof it girl 'cuz we are officially in training for our big trip in September. Just say to yourself, "stairway portage - stairway portage" and you will fly across those portages like Super Woman!

yes, we are staying at their bunkhouse pretrip. Glad to hear your comments. I agree with having the private bathroom/shower. The only other bunkhouse I have stayed at was VNO's (the rooms upstairs) & we had the same type setup. Did the rooms have a fridge or microwave?
Would be nice to keep our steaks frozen for 1st night trip & have hot coffee in the morning for the drive up to our entry point.

Yes, Our trip is booked! And I will be quoting those words: "stairway portage, stairway portage"! We can do it! Yahoo!!!

Nope, no refrig or microwave. Pretty Spartan with just bunks, but reasonable. If you get there early enough you might ask at the lodge about tossing some stuff in refrigerator. We got in around midnight and they just left us a note on the lodge door with directions. Nights were cold enough then that my frozen stuff stayed frozen until third day.

Not fully prepared, as I wasn't sure she was going to pass all her classes. Was thinking on staying at the trails end campground near Seagull or perhaps a bunkhouse at Seagull outfitter. I don't remember how far up the trail center is. Although everyone says food is gooood. I will try to remember to wear my bwca.com t-shirt.

I was surfing last night and checked out VNO's bunkhouse set-up. This looks very nice compared to Rockwood. Rockwood is nice, but VNO looks to be another step up. Just trying to manage expectations...
