I posted on the gear forum, but I'll throw it out here too.
I would'nt think of doing this with a kevlar. To what extent is the structural integrity of a Disco 16 compromised by removing a thwart? This would leave me with only the center yoke and seats for lateral strength.

Obviously, they put it there for a reason, but I would think the yoke and 2 seats on a 16' would provide enough support. No basis in facts, just an opinion.

You got me thinking about this. Now I'm no rocket scientist but here is what I would do.
Measure from the center yolk to the to both seats and and see what the difference is. If the difference isn't that much I would remove it. My thinking on this is that if it's strong enough one way without the extra thwart, why wouldn't it be the other way as well.
I just looked at the Old Town site and the Guide series canoe @ 16 feet has only the center thwart.
Your Discovery 16 is 16' 9" and they added the thwart to the rear.
I think you'll be ok but that's just MHO.
Good luck what ever you choose to do and I hope your canoe doesn't fold in half on you.

You can't explain the obvious to the ignorant.
