Ben Franklin agrees. This is his writting about his displeasure of choosing the eagle as the our representative bird - he backed the turkey:
“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him."

While fishing on Little Trout lake this past September we had a lake trout trailing behind the canoe on a stringer. A Bald Eagle dive bombed us several times coming within 20 feet a few times. Quite the experience!

No problems with eagles. But, two years ago a pike was chomping away on the fish trailing the canoe on the stringer. Last year had a big snapping turtle try to swim off with our stringer of smallies at our campsite.
Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

In 1980 we caught more fish than we could eat for dinner. We built a holding tank with some rocks aolng a big shallow rock face and put our extras in there. In the morning we went to collect breakfast and found 2 eagles very happily making use of the smorgasbord we had provided them! It was pretty cool. We caught more fish after an oatmeal breakfast.

On Ensign last year I was canoeing by a campsite and a guy was cleaning fish. He put the guts on the rocks. Six Eagles came and ate as we went by. Brings a new meaning to the term Eagle Eye.

My uncle and cousins came to visit from the east coast round about 95. Their visions of this majestic national emblem gracefully swooping down low to the water to snatch a rainbow trout from the river were shattered the day we passed one along the road with a couple of turkey vultures scavenging a road killed skunk. I explained to my disillusioned relatives that eagles are also opportunists.
