does anyone bring up a loon call? Do they work well? My cousin has one, but we forgot it on our trip last spring. We were around Kek and Knife and I had never heard so many in my life.

I think it would be loony to bring one. ;)

I think the forest service tries to discourage that sort of thing?

Yes I've heard that also.

Really??? Why would they care?

My guess is that it would be akin to a loon with a human call yelling across the lake "Stay away! This campsite and mate are mine and I will fight to protect them!" or "I am a healthy male ready to breed!....Come see."

You would be confused.

I bought a wooden one many years ago, and it made mention of that fact in the instruction manual, but I don't remember why.

it would be very confusing for a female loon to hear this in late summer....

Supposedly there is a six week period (May and mid June(?) when it is actually against the law to call loons as it can disrupt their mating calls/season. I read it somewhere... take it for what it's worth.

Don't know about the FS caring, but I'd rather listen to the real thing. It would be like going to see Charlie Parker play and having to listen to a 4th grader on a flutophone instead...

It's a loon CALL, not a loon instument. If used properly you will her the real thing.

thanks for the info. The reason I asked is becasue on our last trip there were a lot of loons. At night it would be silent for a while then once one of them called many others would join in. Thought it would be neat to start that up/see if they would respond. Won't be bringing one though as our trips are usually in the earlier parts of spring.
