How many of you tie on a red flag to the back of your canoe when carrying? Is it required by law? Saw an accident today involving a ladder on a top carrier (it did have a red flag on it, but guess it's not the same as a protective force-field). Just got me wondering... I haven't done so in the past.

In Illinois, the law requires that any object extending 4 feet or more from the rear of a vehicle must be marked with a red flag during the day. A red light must be used during night.

I never do this when the canoe is on top, nor have I seen anyone else doing it. I have seen flags on boats protruding from pickup beds.

Many states do require a red flag if an object "overhangs" the back of the vehicle/support. The overhang distances vary from state to state and the flag even has to be a certain size.

Never do and I drive a small car. The magic doesn't hang over much. The Mn-II does a little more, but I don't think it's an issue.

Does anyone know what Wisconsin law says about this?

Does a red canoe make me exempt of the red flag law?

I do because the racks on my truck are set back and the canoe hangs out back about 3-4 feet.
