I stumbled across a book at the library called "500 of the greatest most interesting most excellent & most fun hints for kids." It is from 1984. Here is one of the hints (click on photo; the "hint" on the bottom of hte page).

What do you think?

Holy Cow! I remember doing that in Boy Scouts. I had totally forgotten about the twist line thingie. I don't remember how well it works. I use carabineers for close pins now. Clip things on a pack or hang clothes; Carabineers are Great!

My uncle does that in his barn to hang cat food off the ground... but his clothesline is wire.

I suppose if you got the rope tight enough it would work. Let us know when you try it out.

We use this method every trip. Our 25' of para cord does the trick. Comes in pretty handy on days when lots of gear needs drying.

Great looking book, now I've got another added to the library wish list.

Why not just bring a small plastic bag filled with wooden clothes pins along? Not much weight or space. Works for our groups.

it works, just need enough twists and have it tight. rope has multiple uses, pins not so much.

I use dipper pins.....a trick I heard from Cliff @ the expo last April. They work great. They don't take up as much room as regular clothes pins. Cost $1 for qty of 4 @ wal mart.

Use a .25" cord and bread bag plastic clip closes. They just fit over the .25 line with a piece of cloth inside. They will usually last for a trip or two.

Of course, I just take a half dozen closepins, paint them yellow, and put 'em in with the dishwash kit.

And yes, I'd bet the twisted cord trick would work, in some fashion.

Save the excess rope and hassle and go to Office Depot and buy a dozen of these for $2, or just "borrow" some from the office.

I'll bet you can also find another 100 practical uses for these on the trail.

Nola,
The clothes line does work. I actually bought a ready made one at Sportsmans Warehouse years ago. There are clips on the ends to hang the line. If I remember I could bring it to Wing Night.

I've done it before, but it takes twice as much cord and a lot of time. I often take a few plastic clothes pins now and/or just drape the clothes over the line.

I think the method was more popular before quick drying nylon (etc.) clothing was commonly used.

Nice tip I will try it at wing night.

It's worth a try. I always bring extra line anyway.

In Guatemala, they used braided rope clotheslines, and that is exactly what they do, spread the braid apart and hang the clothes like that.

BRAIDED rope. Very cool idea.

I've done 'the twist' many times. Now, if I don't forget them, I use the spring clip off of 'clip-on I.D. badge' as a mini clothes pin.
